In 2025, Databricks, Genesys, SailPoint, Cerebras Systems and CoreWeave were among the technology companies identified as IPO prospects by Renaissance Capital. Some companies also had reported filing activity or earlier IPO plans. Those signals made them candidates to watch—not companies with guaranteed listing dates. Looking back, PitchBook reported that 17 U.S. unicorns went public during 2025, and 14 did so at valuations below their prior private-market marks.
Which U.S. unicorns were on 2025 IPO watchlists?
Renaissance Capital’s 2025 technology IPO outlook named five companies as prospects: Databricks, Genesys, SailPoint, Cerebras Systems and CoreWeave. Its discussion reflected investor interest in AI and machine learning, the technology IPO backlog, company financing and valuation context, and filing developments. It was a market outlook, not a promise that any company would list in 2025.
TechCrunch’s February 1, 2025 overview covered a different kind of evidence: companies that had announced plans or were reported to have confidentially filed. It named eToro and Voyager Technologies among companies reported to have filed in January, and described earlier filings or plans for Chime, Klarna, Genesys, Clario, Cerebras, Circle, Harry’s and Omada Health. The list is useful as a record of reported activity, but it is not a definitive U.S.-unicorn ranking. TechCrunch also included Shein, General Atlantic and Oyo, which do not all fit a U.S.-only unicorn scope.
ICE and OPEN’s May 6, 2025 announcement of the NYSE OPEN VC Unicorn 20 Index used this definition: “privately held start-up companies with valuations exceeding $1 billion.” It described an index tracking 20 large U.S.-based private venture-backed unicorns. That index provides a useful reference point for the term, but it is not an IPO forecast or a complete list of companies likely to go public.

What each signal meant
| Evidence | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Named in an analyst or market outlook | The company was considered a plausible IPO prospect in that outlook’s market context. | A filing, a fixed timetable or a completed IPO. |
| Reported confidential filing or announced plan | The company may have taken a concrete preparatory step or publicly expressed intent. | That the company would proceed, list on a particular date or retain its private valuation. |
| Completed IPO in retrospective data | The company actually listed within the report’s stated period and definition. | That it was among the earlier forecasts, or that its offering performed well. |
Why a filing did not guarantee a 2025 IPO
A confidential filing is preparation, not a public commitment to complete an offering. TechCrunch’s February 2025 overview explicitly cautioned that companies could delay or withdraw filings as market conditions changed. A company weighing an IPO could also reassess valuation expectations, investor demand and its own readiness. Therefore, an early filing or reported plan was stronger evidence of preparation than a general market-watchlist mention, but neither fixed the outcome.
Databricks illustrates the difference between possibility and schedule. Renaissance Capital reported that the company’s CEO said it could “theoretically” go public as soon as 2025. That reported statement signaled that a 2025 listing was conceivable; it did not establish a commitment or timetable.
What happened to U.S. unicorn IPOs in 2025?
PitchBook’s Q1 2026 retrospective reported that 17 U.S. unicorns went public in 2025, with 14 at lower valuations. In this context, “lower” means lower than the companies’ prior private-market valuation marks; it is not a statement that every IPO was below every earlier valuation measure. PitchBook also said many of the companies traded lower after listing.
That full-year figure is not inconsistent with PitchBook’s earlier midyear numbers. In its 2025 Q3 analyst note, PitchBook reported 10 U.S. unicorn IPOs completed through its midyear reporting period. It also counted 18 U.S. VC-backed IPOs completed through June 2025. The first number concerns unicorn IPOs through the report’s midyear cutoff; the second concerns the broader category of U.S. venture-backed IPOs through June. They are different measures and periods, not competing full-year totals.

Valuations versus private-market peaks
PitchBook’s Q3 2025 note said IPO valuations in 2025 were a median 25% above companies’ highest private-market values, compared with a median 126% in 2021. This is a comparison of medians, not a claim about every issuer. It indicates that the gap between private marks and IPO valuations was much narrower in the 2025 period covered than in the 2021 comparison. The separate retrospective finding that 14 of 17 U.S. unicorn IPOs had lower valuations underscores why a prior private valuation should not be treated as a guaranteed IPO price.
How to judge an IPO candidate list
For any historical or future list of likely listings, weigh the evidence rather than reading the company names as a ranked schedule. The available reporting does not provide calibrated probabilities for each U.S. unicorn.
Rank #4
- Identify the evidence type: distinguish an official announcement from a reported confidential filing, an earlier plan or analyst speculation.
- Check the date and status: a filing report or intention can become stale, and a company can delay or withdraw.
- Confirm the scope: verify where the company is based and whether it meets the definition of a unicorn being used. A global IPO roundup is not automatically a U.S.-unicorn list.
- Separate private valuation from IPO valuation: a prior financing mark is not a promised offering price; compare the valuation basis and timing.
- Consider market and company readiness: investor appetite, sector demand, business maturity and financial profile can affect whether a listing is attractive or feasible.
- Judge outcomes on the right timeline: a midyear count and a full-year retrospective answer different questions, while post-listing trading is distinct from the IPO valuation itself.
How the 2025 watchlist should be read now
The strongest conclusion is not that a particular company was certain to list, but that several kinds of evidence were being conflated in IPO coverage. Renaissance Capital’s list identified technology prospects; TechCrunch documented reported filings and plans; later PitchBook reports counted completed offerings and compared valuations. Together, they show why “likely to go public” was a forecast category rather than a schedule—and why the 2025 outcome should be evaluated using completed IPOs and valuation data, not the earlier appearance of a company on a watchlist.
