Before buying crypto through an online platform, check that the service is available where you live, confirm the exact asset and network, compare the full cost, and understand who controls the private keys. Then secure your account and screen out scams. These steps help you make an informed decision; they cannot make a volatile or speculative asset risk-free.
What should I check before buying crypto on a platform?
- Confirm availability where you live. Check the provider’s current terms for your country or region, including access to the service, the specific asset, payment methods, and withdrawals. Check relevant information from your local regulator as well. A platform being accessible does not mean the SEC has approved or endorsed it.
- Verify the exact asset and network. Make sure the platform supports the asset you intend to buy and, if you may transfer it, the network used by the receiving wallet or service. An incompatible asset or network can make a transfer go wrong and may result in loss.
- Work out the total cost. Look beyond a headline transaction fee. Check the quoted amount of crypto at checkout, any disclosed spread, transfer charges, and account setup, maintenance, or closure fees. The SEC’s custody guidance identifies these as fee categories to ask about; fees and quotes vary by provider and transaction. Read the SEC custody bulletin.
- Understand custody and access. A wallet does not contain crypto; it stores the private keys or passcodes used to access it. With self-custody, you manage the keys and bear responsibility for securing and recovering them. With third-party custody, the provider controls access, so your ability to use or withdraw assets depends on its systems and terms.
- Review how the provider handles assets. Before depositing, look for clear answers about where assets and keys are stored, who can access them, whether customer assets may be commingled or used as collateral, withdrawal conditions, privacy, and what the provider says would happen if it failed. These details can vary by service; do not assume that a platform’s interface or account statement guarantees access in every circumstance.
- Secure the account and recovery information. Use a strong, unique password and enable multifactor authentication if available. Protect private keys and seed phrases: a seed phrase can restore a wallet, and anyone who obtains it may be able to access the assets. Never share it with someone who contacts you claiming to provide support. Be alert to phishing messages and check that you are using the provider’s genuine site or app.
- Reject pressure and guaranteed-return claims. Treat promises of guaranteed or risk-free returns, urgency, unsolicited requests for personal information, and instructions to buy crypto and send it elsewhere as warning signs. Scams can involve impersonation, online relationships, or pitches for lucrative opportunities. Research independently rather than relying on a promoter’s claims; recovering crypto sent to a fraudster can be difficult. See the SEC’s crypto-related fraud alert and the Investor.gov investment fraud checklist.
How should I compare platforms?
Use the same questions for each service you are considering, and verify answers against its current terms and disclosures. A useful comparison is about fit and transparency, not a universal ranking: availability, fees, supported assets, custody arrangements, and protections can differ by jurisdiction and product.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Availability and eligibility | Can you open and use the account where you live? Are the asset, payment method, and withdrawals available to you? |
| Asset and network | Does the service support the exact asset and the network you would use for any transfer? |
| Total cost | What is the checkout quote, and what transaction, spread, transfer, and account fees apply? |
| Custody and control | Who controls the keys? What are the withdrawal terms? How does the provider handle customer assets and describe failure contingencies? |
| Security, support, and privacy | What account protections and recovery options are available? How does the provider explain access to your information and assets? |
| Transparency and conflicts | Does the provider clearly describe its roles and how it uses customer assets? Does it combine exchange, brokerage, or custody functions? |
The SEC warns that some crypto platforms may lack protections available in other regulated markets, and that combining intermediary functions can create conflicts. These are reasons to read product-specific disclosures, not grounds to assume that every platform has the same structure or protections. See the SEC’s investor alert on crypto asset securities.
Do you need a hardware wallet to buy crypto?
No. A physical or “cold” wallet is an optional self-custody choice, not a prerequisite for buying crypto on a platform. The SEC describes cold wallets as typically physical devices that are not connected to the internet and notes that such devices typically cost money. Moving to self-custody also means taking responsibility for key security and recovery; a device does not remove investment or security risks. The SEC bulletin is staff guidance, not a rule, regulation, or statement of the Commission.

What risks remain after you check the platform?
Platform checks can help you understand access, cost, and custody, but they cannot eliminate the risks of the asset or provider. The SEC cautions that crypto asset securities can be exceptionally volatile and speculative. A provider may also have limits or risks that are specific to its product and jurisdiction.
Investment scams are a separate risk. The Federal Trade Commission reported that consumers reported $4.6 billion in losses to investment scams during 2023; this figure covers investment scams overall, not crypto-only losses. FTC data and context.
