In Bloomberg’s 2025 ranking, the Walton family is the world’s richest, with an estimated $513.4 billion. Bloomberg’s figures are dated December 9, 2025—not live 2026 balances—and the list mixes corporate fortunes with ruling-family wealth that can be difficult to separate from state assets.

What drives each family’s wealth?

Walton: Walmart

Bloomberg attributes the Walton fortune to the family’s stake in Walmart, reporting that it owns about 44%. The company had $681 billion in revenue in the most recent fiscal year described in Bloomberg’s feature and served 270 million customers weekly.

Al Nahyan: Abu Dhabi and oil

The Al Nahyan family rules Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital and the emirate containing the vast majority of the country’s oil reserves. Bloomberg emphasizes that personal and sovereign interests overlap. It reports that Sheikh Tahnoon oversees personal and sovereign assets combined worth $1.5 trillion; that combined figure is neither his personal fortune nor the family’s ranking estimate.

Al Saud: oil-linked and business holdings

Bloomberg describes wealth connected to oil, contracts, land deals, and companies serving state businesses. Its estimate covers an extended family Bloomberg says numbers about 15,000 people. Bloomberg says its revised estimate reflects revised past inflows and reduced family-member spending, and that the full family’s controlled wealth may be higher than the ranking figure.

Al Thani: gas and global holdings

Bloomberg traces the family’s wealth particularly to Qatar’s offshore gas fields, alongside domestic businesses and foreign assets.

Hermès: luxury goods

Bloomberg describes a sixth-generation family of more than 100 members whose fortune is tied to the Hermès luxury goods company.

Koch: diversified industry

The Koch family’s fortune is associated with Koch Inc., a diversified industrial business. Bloomberg also reports that a family office manages some of the family’s wealth.

Mars: confectionery and pet care

The family’s wealth comes from Mars Inc. Bloomberg says pet care accounts for more than half of company revenue and reports that Mars acquired Kellanova in 2025.

Ambani: Reliance Industries

Bloomberg connects the Ambani fortune to Reliance Industries and its founder, Dhirubhai Ambani.

Wertheimer: Chanel

The Wertheimer family owns Chanel. Bloomberg reports that Chanel had $18.7 billion in revenue in 2024.

Thomson: Thomson Reuters

Bloomberg says the Thomson family holds about a 70% stake in Thomson Reuters through its investment firm, Woodbridge.

How should you interpret a family-wealth ranking?

These estimates are not audited family balance sheets. They describe Bloomberg’s estimates for a selected group of fortunes it considered possible to value—not every wealthy extended family on identical terms. Bloomberg’s family-ranking methodology excludes first-generation fortunes and fortunes controlled by a single heir, as well as clans whose wealth is too diffuse or opaque to value.

The list combines quite different kinds of wealth. A family’s stake in a publicly traded company is easier to identify than assets entangled with a ruling family, a government, or a sovereign economy. Bloomberg specifically notes that the lines between personal and state assets blur for the Al Nahyan family; the Al Saud estimate also concerns a very large extended family. Their figures should not be treated as directly comparable to corporate stakes with the same precision.

Bloomberg’s separate Billionaires Index methodology offers general context, but it is not identified as the exact method used for this family feature. For that individual index, Bloomberg says it values public stakes at the latest closing price, converts values to US dollars at current exchange rates, estimates closely held companies using comparable firms or transactions, and applies a standard 5% liquidity discount to most closely held companies where assets may be hard to sell. It also excludes ownership that cannot be verified. See Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index methodology for those details.

What does the ranking say about wealth concentration?

Bloomberg reported that the 25 families on its 2025 list had combined wealth of $2.9 trillion, $358.7 billion more than a year earlier. Its minimum estimated wealth for inclusion was $46.4 billion, $9.7 billion above the prior year’s threshold. Those are Bloomberg’s 2025 figures, not timeless measures of global wealth.

The top ten span retail, energy and ruling-family wealth, luxury goods, industrial companies, consumer products, and media. Three entries—Al Nahyan, Al Saud, and Al Thani—are Gulf ruling families, which makes the distinction between family wealth and state-linked assets especially important when comparing the list.
