David Neeleman founded Breeze Airways to connect midsize U.S. cities with direct flights, giving travelers an alternative to routing through a major hub. Breeze began flying on May 27, 2021, and the company reported reaching 88 cities by its fifth anniversary in 2026. Its growth and a company-announced profitable quarter are notable milestones, but neither establishes that Breeze is consistently profitable.
Who is David Neeleman?
David Neeleman is an airline entrepreneur and the founder of Breeze Airways. Breeze identified him as its founder and CEO in its May 2026 fifth-anniversary announcement. His plan for the airline drew on experience building Azul in Brazil: in a 2025 interview with APEX, Neeleman described connecting midsize American cities that had lost service as a core founding idea.
That idea treats air service as more than a matter of connecting smaller communities to established hubs. A direct route between two midsize cities can save passengers a connection, while potentially making air travel more convenient for people who might otherwise drive or travel through a larger airport. Whether a particular route can support the service depends on demand and operating economics; the concept itself does not guarantee that every underserved city pair will work.
When did Breeze Airways start flying?
Breeze’s inaugural flight was Tampa to Charleston on May 27, 2021, according to the company’s May 2026 fifth-anniversary announcement. The airline said it began with service to 16 cities. Its early plan used point-to-point routes—flights between two cities rather than a network built primarily around connections through a central hub—and included Embraer aircraft, as described in a launch-era interview about Breeze’s launch fares.

What makes Breeze Airways different?
Direct links between midsize markets
In the hub-and-spoke model, an airline routes many travelers through a major airport so they can connect onward to other destinations. Breeze’s stated strategy instead emphasizes selected point-to-point routes between midsize American cities. That can mean a nonstop option where a traveler might otherwise connect through a large hub, but it does not mean every Breeze destination is linked directly to every other one.
For Breeze, the practical challenge is matching a route’s likely demand to the aircraft and schedule serving it. A direct flight can be more convenient, while a hub-based network can offer travelers a broader set of onward connections. Breeze’s 2025 APEX interview discusses Neeleman’s reasoning about midsize markets and the Airbus A220; it is an account of his approach, not proof that one aircraft type or route strategy is always less costly than alternatives.

Aircraft and the passenger experience
Breeze’s fifth-anniversary release reported a fleet of 52 Airbus A220-300 aircraft in May 2026. In the APEX interview, Neeleman discussed the A220’s cabin layout and its ability to accommodate first-class seating, with a different seat-count trade-off per row than larger narrowbody aircraft. Aircraft choice affects capacity and the possible cabin configuration, but those details alone do not establish route profitability or the experience on every flight.
Fares and what is included
At launch, Breeze described fare bundles called “Nice” and “Nicer.” A launch-era account said “Nice” included a personal item, while “Nicer” was described as adding extra legroom, a full-sized carry-on, a checked bag, a drink, and a snack. Those examples explain how the airline presented its fares when it started; they are not a statement of Breeze’s current baggage rules, bundle names, or inclusions. Travelers should check the terms shown for their specific flight before booking.

Where does Breeze Airways fly?
Network totals vary by source and snapshot date. In its May 2026 fifth-anniversary announcement, Breeze reported serving 88 cities across 35 states and five countries, with more than 300 routes. Those are company-reported figures at that date, not live schedule totals. Breeze’s official The Breeze Difference page separately describes a network serving more than 90 cities in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, and says the airline has 13 crew bases. The two city counts are different snapshots and may reflect different counting dates or definitions, so they should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison.
The same official page says Breeze carried more than 5.5 million guests in 2025. For an actual trip, use Breeze’s current booking tools to confirm whether it serves the city pair and dates you need: a network total does not indicate that a nonstop route operates every day, year-round, or at a particular time.

Is Breeze Airways profitable?
In January 2025, Breeze announced that the fourth quarter of 2024 was its first full quarter of operating profit. This is a company-reported milestone, not evidence by itself of audited annual profitability or a sustained pattern of profits. A single profitable quarter also does not answer questions about cash flow, debt, or how the airline will perform in later periods. The announcement can be read here.
For a personal-finance-minded traveler, the distinction matters: an airline’s growth or operating result does not tell you whether a particular ticket is a good value. Compare the full price and rules for your trip—including any fees or add-ons you would need—rather than inferring fare value or service reliability from company growth figures.

What Breeze’s growth says—and does not say
Breeze’s story is an attempt to make direct service work in city pairs that may be overlooked by networks organized around major hubs. Its reported expansion from 16 cities at launch to 88 cities by May 2026, plus its announced first full quarter of operating profit, shows meaningful company-reported progress. It does not establish that every route is successful, that service will remain available on a specific schedule, or that Breeze has achieved sustained profitability. Those questions require current route information and financial results over time.
