There is no single reliable, current ranking of the richest NFL players of all time. Lists use different measures: estimated net worth or cumulative NFL career earnings. For example, Statista’s January 2023 net-worth list put former player and executive Jerry Richardson at about US$2 billion, while Sportsbet Huddle estimated Tom Brady’s net worth at about US$350 million in August 2026. Those are dated estimates from different publishers, not comparable audited valuations.
Career earnings answer how much a player was paid through NFL football; net worth attempts to estimate a person’s overall assets minus liabilities. They cannot be combined into one ranking, and neither a contract’s headline value nor the sale price of a business establishes its owner’s personal wealth.
What does “richest NFL player” mean?
Most lists mean one of two things, and the distinction changes who appears at the top.
- Estimated net worth: a publisher’s estimate of a person’s wealth across their financial life, potentially including investments, businesses, endorsements and broadcasting income, less liabilities. It is not necessarily based on a disclosed or audited balance sheet.
- NFL career earnings: reported cumulative payments from playing in the NFL. This does not include every possible source of wealth and is not the same as current assets or net worth.
A player can rank highly in career earnings without having the highest estimated net worth. Conversely, business success after football can make a former player’s wealth exceed what playing salaries alone would suggest.

Who tops the available rankings?
The answer depends on the metric, publisher and cutoff date. These examples illustrate why a single “richest ever” list would be misleading:
| Ranking and measure | Published result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Statista, estimated net worth, January 2023 | Jerry Richardson: about US$2 billion | A historical, publisher-specific estimate—not a current or audited valuation. The same list placed Roger Staubach at US$600 million and Fran Tarkenton at US$300 million. |
| Sportsbet Huddle, estimated net worth, August 2026 | Tom Brady: about US$350 million | A separate estimate from a different publisher and date. Sportsbet Huddle notes that estimates vary widely between publishers. |
| Statista, cumulative NFL career earnings, as of March 2025 | Aaron Rodgers: more than US$418 million | Football career earnings, not net worth. |
| Salary Sport, all-time earnings table, accessed October 8, 2026 | Matthew Stafford: US$426,306,037; Aaron Rodgers: US$418,158,010 | The table’s stated coverage begins in 2005, so it is not a complete historical measure of players from earlier eras. |
The net-worth figures above are not harmonized: the publishers may use different methods and include different assets or income. The earnings figures also have different dates and coverage. Read each as a source-specific snapshot, not as proof of a definitive all-time winner.

Why business success can change the picture
Roger Staubach’s real-estate career
Roger Staubach is a clear example of why playing pay alone may not capture a former player’s wealth. Celebrity Net Worth says he founded commercial real-estate firm The Staubach Company in 1977 and estimates his personal net worth at US$300 million. It reports that JLL acquired the company in 2008 in a deal valued at roughly US$650 million. That transaction value is the company’s reported deal value—not a disclosure of Staubach’s personal proceeds or net worth.
Statista’s January 2023 list, by contrast, estimated Staubach’s net worth at US$600 million. The gap underscores that these are differing publisher estimates, not settled financial facts.

How to compare “richest” lists
Before treating two rankings as comparable, check what each one actually measures:
- Metric: net worth, NFL career earnings, contract value and annual income are different measures.
- Cutoff date: an active player’s career earnings can change as new payments are reported; a net-worth estimate also belongs to the date its publisher gives.
- Historical coverage: some earnings databases cover only recent seasons. Salary Sport states that its series begins in 2005, limiting comparisons with players from earlier NFL eras.
- Income and assets counted: check whether a list includes endorsements, broadcasting, real estate, business equity, investments or ownership interests. The available estimates do not disclose a consistent method for comparing these categories.
- Person versus company: a business’s acquisition price is not the same as the owner’s retained personal wealth.
- Individual versus household: do not assume an estimate includes—or excludes—a spouse’s assets unless the source says so.
Who is the highest-paid NFL player of all time?
“Highest-paid” usually points to career earnings, not net worth. Statista’s 2025 snapshot named Aaron Rodgers as the leader in cumulative NFL career earnings in the United States, with more than US$418 million as of March 2025. Salary Sport’s table, accessed October 8, 2026, lists Stafford ahead of Rodgers in its 2005–2026 coverage. Different dates and historical coverage explain why those lists need not show the same leader; neither answers who has the greatest overall net worth.
