The best holiday delivery meal depends on how much cooking you want to do. For a flexible spread you assemble dish by dish, WIRED’s 2025 Blue Apron example was reported at about $130 and served at least eight, but took more than three hours to prepare. Sunbasket’s 2025 Chef’s Table was a more bundled, elaborate cooking project. If you want dinner with little finishing, Zabar’s currently lists a prepared dinner for six for $398; it is not a meal kit. These prices and menus are tied to different dates, so compare the live offer before ordering.
How to choose a holiday meal delivery format
“Delivered” does not necessarily mean ready to eat. Holiday options range from a box of ingredients and recipes to separate dishes you select, subscriber-menu add-ons, or a prepared dinner that mainly needs heating. Start with the amount of planning and cooking you are willing to take on, then check the full cost, portions, kitchen demands, dietary flexibility, and delivery calendar.
- Choose a bundled meal box if you want a coordinated menu without sourcing every ingredient yourself, and can manage several cooking steps.
- Choose à la carte dishes if you want to fill specific gaps in your own menu or select only the courses you want.
- Choose a subscription menu only if the service’s current signup and ordering terms work for you.
- Choose a prepared dinner if low-effort finishing matters more than the experience of cooking a meal kit.

The detailed meal-kit comparisons below describe the 2025 holiday season, not a confirmed 2026 slate. Zabar’s listing was accessed in 2026 and is a prepared dinner, a different category from meal kits.

What the prices do—and do not—tell you
Do not compare the historical Blue Apron and Sunbasket figures as if they were current quotes or directly equivalent packages. The Blue Apron figure describes one reviewer’s spread and serving estimate; Sunbasket’s figures were the provider’s price for a specific 2025 box, including a time-limited early-bird offer. Zabar’s $398 figure is a retailer listing accessed in 2026 for six diners. For any current order, compare the complete meal for your group, including delivery charges and any add-ons the provider publishes.

Check cooking time and kitchen capacity before buying
A meal box can reduce shopping and menu planning without reducing the work on the day. The 2025 Sunbasket box illustrates the gap between provider estimates and one reviewer’s experience: Sunbasket estimated around 2.5 hours of cooking, while WIRED reported a little over three hours with help. WIRED’s Blue Apron spread took the reviewer more than three hours. These are distinct reported observations, not standardized timing tests.
Before checkout, consider whether you have enough refrigerator space, oven and stovetop capacity, thawing time, and serving dishes for all courses. An accessory oven may help with a crowded menu; WIRED cited the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro as an example, not as a required purchase or a necessity for any specific kit. [WIRED, 2025]
Verify subscriptions, substitutions, and dietary needs
Ordering terms differ by provider and season. WIRED described Blue Apron’s 2025 à la carte holiday ordering as not requiring a subscription, while HelloFresh’s holiday dishes were on its subscriber menu and Green Chef’s were subscriber-only. Sunbasket said its 2025 holiday boxes could not be altered or substituted; its recipe cards marked allergens. These historical details do not establish current terms.
