The Rise and Fall of Art Williams Jr., the Counterfeiter Behind a Notorious $100-Bill Case

Art Williams Jr.’s reported counterfeiting career, prison terms and later turn toward painting are the subject of a 2014 Gizmodo feature and subsequent profiles.

The 2014 Gizmodo feature The Rise and Fall of America’s Greatest Convicted Counterfeiter is about Art Williams Jr., a Chicago-born counterfeiter whose story centered on attempts to imitate the 1996-series $100 bill. “America’s greatest” is the headline’s characterization, not an established ranking. Later profiles describe repeated prison terms and a turn toward painting; those accounts offer a portrait of one person, not a measure of counterfeiting overall.

Who was Art Williams Jr.?

Adam Clark Estes’s August 13, 2014 Gizmodo feature traces Williams’s early life in the Chicago suburbs and his introduction to counterfeiting by his mother’s boyfriend, known as DaVinci. The article describes Williams developing a reputation for convincing replicas of the 1996-series $100 bill. Its account is a reported narrative, not a court record, so its biographical details and chronology should be understood as the feature’s reporting.

The headline’s superlative should be read the same way: as a dramatic description of Williams, not proof that he held a formally recognized or independently measured title. The sources discussing him provide no comparative ranking of American counterfeiters.

How the story moved from counterfeiting to prison

Gizmodo recounts a 2001 arrest at a Chicago hotel involving counterfeit bills. According to the feature, a court later suppressed evidence after finding that the search was illegal. It then describes Williams relocating to Alaska, where investigators’ work on counterfeiting led them to Williams and his father.

HVM Counterfeit Money Detector Pen (5 Counterfeit Pens) | Detect Fake Bills
  • Quick currency check with specially formulated ink designed to help identify potential counterfeit bills during cash transactions.
  • Easy-to-read mark — a dark mark may indicate a bill that requires further inspection, while a light amber mark typically appears on standard paper currency.
  • Box of 5 counterfeit detection pens designed for use in retail stores, restaurants, banks, offices, and other environments where cash is handled.
  • Chisel-tip marker design allows smooth marking on paper currency and supports consistent use across multiple transactions.
  • Compact and lightweight for convenient storage at checkout counters, cash registers, or for carrying during mobile or on-the-go transactions.

The reported timeline includes a first federal prison term and a later return to counterfeiting, followed by another arrest. Gizmodo gives the first term as 31 months; Jason Kersten’s 2024 Rolling Stone excerpt describes it as two years. For the later sentence, Gizmodo reports six and a half years, while Rolling Stone calls it seven years. These accounts differ in precision, so the safest summary is that Williams served about two years on the first term and received a later sentence of about seven years. WBEZ reported in 2023 that he had served three prison stints.

Gizmodo also attributed to Rolling Stone reporting an estimate of about $50,000 in counterfeit notes produced per month. That is a historical figure relayed in a 2014 article, not an independently verified statistic or a measure of counterfeiting generally.

What made the case notable—and what it does not prove

The Gizmodo narrative emphasizes the skill Williams reportedly brought to imitating currency. In WBEZ’s 2023 profile, Michael Sweazey, identified as a former head of the Secret Service office in Anchorage, said: “It takes somebody with real skill to make real good counterfeit money.” That observation helps explain the fascination with Williams’s story, but it does not establish that his work was unmatched or that the headline’s “greatest” label is factual.

For readers interested in personal finance, the broader lesson is that currency trust depends on security features and public confidence—not just a bill’s appearance. The sources here focus on one criminal biography; they do not supply population-wide figures about counterfeiting or support general conclusions about its prevalence.

What happened after prison?

Gizmodo’s 2014 article described Williams as working as a janitor and transporting exotic cars, while developing an art and clothing venture and considering a book and documentary. Those details describe his circumstances and plans as reported at that time, not his current activities.

WBEZ’s June 2023 profile described Williams as a painter. It offers later context for the move toward art, but does not establish his present-day work or circumstances. In a 2014 interview with Estes, Williams reflected: “I tried to run from the streets, but unfortunately the streets were already in me.”
