There is no evidence here that one gaming segment or company is destined to be the next big investment winner. Newzoo’s forecasts point to a growing global games market, but market growth is not the same as strong returns for a particular stock. The most useful approach is to treat gaming as an investment theme and compare each company’s exposure, revenue durability, execution and valuation.
What the market forecasts say about gaming
Newzoo forecast that the global games market would generate $213.9 billion in 2026, up 6.1% year over year. It also forecast 3.70 billion players in 2026, up 4.4%, and 1.65 billion spenders, up 4.7%. The implied player-to-spender conversion rate was 44.6%. These are Newzoo’s 2026 forecasts, not finalized 2026 results.
For PC and console, Newzoo projected a combined market of $103.7 billion by 2028. That is a forecast for those platforms together, not a prediction that every PC- or console-focused company will grow at the same rate.
These figures describe expected industry scale and participation. They do not establish which companies will capture that spending, whether their share prices already reflect expected growth, or what returns investors may earn. A large or expanding market can still contain businesses with weak margins, costly development, or valuations that leave little room for disappointment.

Where a gaming investment opportunity might emerge
“Gaming” covers several different business exposures. A potential opportunity is a hypothesis about how a company could benefit—not a conclusion that its stock is attractive.
- Publishers: Revenue can come from premium game sales and ongoing in-game spending. The key questions are whether a publisher can sustain engagement, release successful titles, and avoid relying too heavily on a small number of games.
- Platform holders: Companies operating gaming platforms may participate in activity across a wider ecosystem. Their gaming exposure should be assessed separately from other businesses and revenue sources.
- Hardware suppliers: Gaming consoles and PC components can benefit from demand for hardware, but sales may be tied to upgrade cycles and the fortunes of the broader hardware business.
- Enabling-technology companies: Suppliers of technology used in gaming may have exposure to the theme without being pure-play gaming companies. NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 announcement refers to its gaming display platform, but that reference alone does not establish how material gaming is to the company’s valuation or prospects.
How gaming companies make money—and why the mix matters
Newzoo reported that in 2025, microtransactions represented 48% of PC revenue, or $20.6 billion, while premium game sales represented 29%, or $12.5 billion. These are PC-market figures reported by Newzoo in 2026, not shares of the entire games market. The two categories do not account for all PC revenue, and revenue mixes vary across platforms and companies.

Premium sales can depend on a release finding an audience; recurring in-game spending depends on continued player interest and spending. Neither model is automatically more durable. For an individual company, examine how much revenue comes from its leading titles, whether players keep returning, and whether new releases or content can maintain engagement. Newzoo’s PC and console analysis tracks premium and free-to-play performance as well as playtime allocation, which can help frame those questions.
A practical framework for comparing gaming investments
- Define the exposure. Identify whether the business is primarily mobile, PC, console, hardware, platform, publishing, or enabling technology. Then check the regions it serves; market growth and monetization differ by platform and geography.
- Trace the revenue model. Separate premium sales from recurring or in-game spending, and determine how concentrated revenue is in individual titles. Look for evidence that engagement can persist rather than assuming a large player base guarantees repeat spending.
- Assess the company, not just the category. A market forecast does not show which publisher, platform holder, supplier, or technology company will capture growth. For diversified companies, distinguish gaming-related activity from the rest of the business.
- Test valuation and execution. Compare the company’s price with its financial performance, balance sheet, and risks, and consider what must go right for expected growth to justify that price. The market and company figures above do not provide comparable valuations, balance-sheet analysis, or investment-return forecasts.
- Decide what would change your view. Set out the evidence that would support or weaken the investment case, such as changes in title concentration, player engagement, monetization, or the company’s ability to deliver. This helps keep a thematic idea from turning into an unsupported prediction.
Use market rankings as a screen, not a buy list
Newzoo offers forecasts by platform and region, along with rankings of public game companies by game revenue. These resources can help identify where activity is concentrated and which listed companies have gaming revenue. A revenue ranking measures scale on that basis; it does not rank expected shareholder returns, account for valuation, or show that a company is financially attractive.

Before treating any name as a candidate, pair market data with company-specific evidence: financial statements, business-segment disclosures, capital needs, competitive position, and valuation. If those are unavailable or not comparable, the responsible conclusion is that the investment case remains unresolved—not that the largest market or company is the best opportunity.

Newzoo’s 2026 outlook supports the view that gaming is a large market with forecast growth, while its PC and console analysis points to substantial projected scale through 2028. The figures do not identify a single likely winner. Any “next big” opportunity should therefore be treated as a company-specific thesis to test against revenue durability, exposure, execution, and valuation—not as a return forecast based on industry growth alone.
