Mike Ashley paid about £134 million for Newcastle United in 2007. A contemporaneous report put his all-share takeover bid at £133 million, while a separate £55 million payment bought the Hall family’s 41.6% stake. The Derby County story is a different episode: in January 2022, Sky Sports reported Ashley was preparing a £50 million offer, not that he had completed a £60 million takeover.
What Mike Ashley paid for Newcastle United
The clearest short answer is about £134 million. In May 2007, The Guardian reported that St James’ Holdings Limited, the vehicle set up to buy Newcastle shares, had paid Sir John Hall and his family £55 million for their 41.6% stake. The same report described Ashley’s bid for all the club’s shares as worth £133 million, at 100p per share. The different amounts refer to different parts and scopes of the transaction; they should not be treated as the same payment. The Guardian’s 2007 account.
A later Guardian article, published in 2017, summarized the purchase price as £134 million. That retrospective figure is why £134 million is commonly used as the headline answer. The Guardian’s 2017 report.
Why the £55m, £133m and £134m figures differ
| Figure | What it describes | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| £55m | Payment for the Hall family’s 41.6% Newcastle stake | The Guardian, 23 May 2007 |
| £133m | Reported value of the bid for all Newcastle shares, at 100p per share | The Guardian, 23 May 2007 |
| £134m | Retrospective description of Ashley’s Newcastle purchase price | The Guardian, 2017 |
These are not three competing prices for an identical transaction. The £55 million figure covers a particular stake; £133 million was the reported value of the all-share offer; and £134 million is the later rounded purchase-price description. The contemporaneous report does not establish that £133 million and £134 million represent separate payments.

Ashley’s Newcastle loans are separate from the purchase price
The 2017 Guardian report also said Ashley had provided Newcastle with £129 million in interest-free loans. It combined that amount with the £134 million purchase price to describe £263 million as his purchase-and-loan outlay. That is a combined measure used in the article, not a revised price paid to acquire the club. The Guardian’s 2017 report.
The same article said Ashley was reportedly seeking £350 million to £400 million for Newcastle. It illustrated a £380 million sale price as producing a £117 million gain over the £263 million purchase-and-loan outlay. That was the article’s calculation based on its stated figures, not an audited or universal measure of profit.

What the Derby County takeover report said
The Derby County report was about a proposed bid in January 2022, years after Ashley bought Newcastle. Sky Sports reported that Ashley was preparing a formal £50 million offer for Derby and might seek to buy Pride Park separately. The report also noted that Sports Direct had a large distribution centre nearby. It does not establish a completed Derby takeover or a £60 million Ashley purchase price. Sky Sports’ 8 January 2022 report.
The available report does not explain what the £60 million wording refers to. It would therefore be misleading to present that amount as Ashley’s Derby bid or as the price of a completed acquisition. The documented figure in the Sky Sports account is a proposed £50 million offer, with Pride Park potentially considered separately.

How Ashley’s Newcastle ownership ended
Ashley’s ownership ended with Newcastle’s 2021 takeover. The Guardian, carrying a Reuters report, said the successful group comprising Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media had made a reported £300 million offer. Ashley said, “I received a higher offer for the club than the one that I accepted,” but the report did not identify the rejected bidder or state its amount.
