NBP’s 2016 newsletter gives its altitude as 15,397 feet (4,693 metres) above sea level and says it is powered by solar and wind. But the machine’s current operating status is unverified, so travelers should not count on it for cash.
Where is the world’s highest ATM?
The ATM stands at Khunjerab Pass, on the Karakoram Highway near the Pakistan–China border. National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) says it installed the machine to serve tourists and business activity along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor route. The bank says solar and wind provide its power. How high is the Khunjerab Pass ATM?
NBP’s 2016 newsletter puts the ATM at 15,397 feet above sea level. Radio Pakistan reported the same elevation for Khunjerab Pass in January 2026. However, an NBP-hosted article published by Pakistan & Gulf Economist in 2017 gives a different altitude: 16,007 feet. The published figures conflict, so 15,397 feet is the best-supported figure for the ATM, but the source record is not entirely consistent. The 2017 account contains the higher figure; Radio Pakistan’s January 2026 report gives the pass elevation.
Does the ATM work, and should you rely on it?
Whether the machine is currently dispensing cash is not established. NBP’s online ATM finder and a 2024 NBP procurement document do not confirm this specific machine’s operating hours, cash availability or accepted cards. A recent travel guide describes it as a curiosity along the drive from Hunza and advises visitors not to rely on it. Has it been confirmed as a Guinness World Record?
NBP has reported receiving a Guinness World Records title for the highest-altitude ATM. In the bank’s 2016 newsletter, then-President and CEO Syed Ahmed Iqbal Ashraf said, “We are very proud to have won this well recognized international title for installing the world’s highest altitude ATM.” That statement records the bank’s claim about its recognition; the current Guinness listing has not been independently verified, so the title should not be treated as confirmed as current today. Pass access can change with weather and road conditions. Radio Pakistan reported that the Frontier Works Organization cleared Khunjerab Pass on January 2, 2026, using snow-clearance machinery to keep the Karakoram Highway operational during severe cold; the report described temperatures of minus 20°C during that operation. This is a dated account of conditions at that time—not a current clearance, a climate average or a guarantee of year-round access. Check road and pass conditions shortly before departure.
