The auction is over: Sotheby’s sold the Martian meteorite NWA 16788 in New York on July 16, 2025. Its hammer price was $4.3 million; the total including buyer fees was approximately $5.3 million. Before the sale, Sotheby’s estimated it at $2 million to $4 million.
What is NWA 16788?
NWA 16788 is a 24.67-kilogram (54.39-pound) Martian meteorite, reported as the largest individual Martian meteorite found on Earth. Its Northwest Africa name reflects the broad classification used for finds, while reporting places its discovery in Niger’s Agadez region. The meteorite hunter reportedly found it in November 2023.
For comparison, the previous size record cited in coverage was Taoudenni 002, which weighs 14.51 kilograms. NWA 16788 is substantially heavier, making its size one reason the specimen drew attention before its sale.
How was its Martian identity assessed?
The identification was not based on appearance alone. Reporting says a small sample was sent to the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, which confirmed its Martian identity, and that the specimen underwent formal testing and publication in the Meteoritical Bulletin. The reported assessment considered composition, shock effects and maskelynite, a glass formed under shock conditions.

- Own a Genuine Piece of Mars: This authentic Martian meteorite was ejected from the surface of Mars by a cosmic impact and traveled millions of miles through space before landing on Earth.
- Certified Extraterrestrial Specimen: Each piece comes from a scientifically documented meteorite classified as Martian in origin.
- A Tangible Link to Interplanetary Exploration: As missions by NASA, SpaceX, and global space agencies gear up for Mars exploration, this specimen offers a rare physical connection to the Red Planet.
- Rare and Scientifically Priceless: Martian meteorites are among the rarest materials on Earth—ideal for collectors, educators, and those with an eye on the stars.
- Perfect Gift for Space Enthusiasts: Whether you're a seasoned meteorite collector or a future-focused dreamer, this piece of Mars is a timeless treasure from beyond Earth.
The available coverage describes those steps but does not reproduce the full Meteoritical Bulletin entry. It is therefore more accurate to say the specimen was scientifically assessed and documented than to imply that this article independently reviews the underlying analysis.
What did it sell for?
| Figure | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-sale estimate | $2 million–$4 million | Sotheby’s estimate reported by Space.com before the 2025 sale. |
| Hammer price | $4.3 million | The winning bid before buyer fees, reported after the July 16, 2025 auction. |
| Total including buyer fees | Approximately $5.3 million | The reported fee-inclusive price paid at the completed sale. |
The final bid exceeded Sotheby’s $4 million upper estimate. Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s vice chairman of science and natural history, said smaller Martian meteorites had sold for $20,000 to $80,000, while cautioning that estimates are guides rather than guaranteed values: “At the end of the day, it’s the bidders who tell us what things are worth, not me, not anyone else. The estimates are just there to give people an indication.”

What is known about its discovery and export?
After the reported 2023 discovery in Niger, reporting described a Nigerien investigation into whether the meteorite had been illegally exported, as well as a suspension of exports of meteorites and precious stones. These reports do not establish that an illegal export occurred or state the investigation’s final outcome.
Sotheby’s offered its own account, telling Euronews and the Associated Press in August 2025: “As with everything we sell, all necessary documentation was in order at each stage of its journey, in accordance with best practice and the requirements of the countries involved.” That is the auction house’s position; the available reporting does not resolve the inquiry or establish whether any sale proceeds went to Niger.

Will it be available for public viewing or study?
The buyer was reported as anonymous, and available reporting does not establish what the buyer plans to do with the meteorite. Its private sale has raised a broader question about whether a rare scientific object should be privately held or made accessible to researchers and the public.
Paleontologist Steve Brusatte argued for public access, saying it “belongs in a museum, where it can be studied, and where it can be enjoyed by children and families and the public at large.” Planetary scientist Julia Cartwright offered a more open possibility: “The scientific interest will remain, and the new owner may be very interested in learning from it, so we may still gather lots of science from this.” Neither statement confirms a plan for museum display or future study.

Why the headline needs updating
The advertised auction is no longer upcoming, and $4 million was the top of the pre-sale estimate—not the final amount paid. The completed sale brought a $4.3 million hammer price and an approximately $5.3 million total including buyer fees. NWA 16788’s record-setting reported mass and its disputed path to market remain central to understanding why the sale mattered.
