WaterField’s “Air Travel iMac Carry-on” is an April Fools’ joke, not a bag the company presents for sale. The concept is gloriously simple: take the logic of an ordinary carry-on and apply it to a 24-inch iMac, for travelers who think a MacBook Pro just won’t do.
What is WaterField’s iMac carry-on?
WaterField calls the entry “2024: Air Travel iMac Carry-on” in its April Fools’ archive. The page’s tagline sets up the gag: “The Air Travel iMac Carry On, for when a MacBook Pro just won’t do.” It imagines taking a 24-inch iMac onto a plane and making its oversized screen the centerpiece of an in-flight spectacle.
WaterField’s joke copy leans into the absurdity: “Let’s face it: Size matters. Those other guys on the plane with their puny 16-inch screens will be green with envy when you pull out your 24-inch iMac.” The joke works because it treats a desktop all-in-one as if it were just another travel screen upgrade.
Did WaterField really make the bag?
No. The archive presents the iMac carry-on as an April Fools’ entry, not as a real product listing. It gives no basis to say WaterField is developing or plans to sell it. The company has used April Fools’ humor before; a 2019 Cult of Mac article covered an earlier parody, but that history does not turn this 2024 gag into a product announcement.

What does WaterField actually sell for travel?
WaterField does sell real travel bags, but their designs should not be confused with the imaginary iMac carrier. The company describes two options with very different approaches to packing:
| Bag | Manufacturer-described format | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| 48-Hour Travel System | Combines a Carryall, removable Slim Brief, and Monolite packing cubes; the Carryall is described for plane, train, and car travel. | Modular organization: separate components can be arranged around a trip. |
| Packable Duffel | Folds into its interior pocket for suitcase storage and expands to hold additional gear; intended for travel and everyday carry. | Pack-away flexibility: carry a compact spare bag, then expand it when needed. |
Those descriptions come from WaterField, not independent testing. They do not establish that either bag fits an iMac or meets any particular airline’s carry-on rules. Product configurations and availability can change.

Why the joke works
The gag takes a familiar travel-bag problem—how much gear to bring—and pushes it well past practicality. A laptop is already a portable screen; an iMac is a desktop computer built around a large display. WaterField’s joke skips the sensible question of whether that makes a good travel setup and jumps straight to the imagined bragging rights of pulling out a 24-inch screen in flight.
Would you take an iMac on a plane? As a real travel plan, the archive offers no product or practical case for it. As a visual punchline about screen envy, the image is hard to beat. That is why the imaginary bag rules—and why it would be fun to see WaterField make a real carry-on inspired by the joke, even though the company has not said it will.
