For Labor Day 2026, most of the grocery chains covered in national reports were open, but schedules varied: Aldi had limited hours, Costco was closed, and some pharmacies or departments kept separate hours. Labor Day fell on Monday, September 7, 2026, so these are historical holiday schedules—not confirmation of what will happen in a future year. CBS News and The Associated Press reported the 2026 status; check the local store listing before traveling for another observance.
Which grocery stores were open on Labor Day 2026?
The following status reflects reports for Monday, September 7, 2026. A chain-wide report is not a guarantee that every location or service followed the same schedule.
| Chain | Reported 2026 status | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Aldi | Open with limited hours | Check the specific store’s holiday schedule. |
| Food Lion | Open during normal business hours | Local schedules may vary. |
| Kroger | Open during regular store hours | CBS News reported a few exceptions. Kroger said pharmacy and clinic hours may vary. |
| Stop & Shop | Open during regular hours | Pharmacies were reported closed. |
| Trader Joe’s | Open during regular hours | Confirm a local store’s schedule for a future holiday. |
| Wegmans | Open | Some departments may have limited hours. |
| BJ’s Wholesale Club | Listed as open | The club’s holiday page lists Labor Day among federal holidays when it is open; verify local details. |
| Costco | Closed | The Associated Press reported it as a notable warehouse-club exception. |
The chain-specific schedule information was reported by CBS News; Kroger’s own notice says its stores are open on Labor Day during regular store hours, with pharmacy and clinic hours subject to variation (Kroger). BJ’s lists Labor Day on its holiday-hours page. The AP’s broader report said most major national grocery stores were open and noted that local hours vary (AP).
How to check a store before you go
- Open the chain’s official store locator or holiday-hours listing and select the exact location.
- Check the date-specific hours rather than relying on the chain’s typical weekday schedule.
- If you need a pharmacy, clinic, or particular department, confirm that service’s hours separately; the grocery store’s opening time does not establish that every service is available.
- If no holiday hours are displayed, contact the location directly before making the trip.
CBS News advised checking local hours because they can differ from the reported chain schedule. Since the September 2026 holiday has passed, consult current local listings for a later Labor Day rather than treating the 2026 information as a standing policy.

Why Labor Day schedules need a local check
Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September; the Associated Press noted that a 1894 act established that date as a legal holiday. A national holiday can affect store hours without closing every grocery chain, and a chain’s store floor may follow a different schedule from its pharmacy or other departments.
