Choose a diaper size by checking your baby’s current weight against the chart for the exact brand and product line, then judge the fit on your baby. Weight ranges overlap, and babies have different shapes, so age alone cannot tell you which size to use. A diaper should feel snug without being tight, cover the bottom, and have leg cuffs that sit without gaps.
How diaper sizes work
Diaper size labels are not standardized across brands. Use a brand’s own weight chart as your starting point, not a universal size conversion. Even within a chart, ranges can overlap: two adjacent sizes may both include your baby’s weight. In that case, comfort and fit help decide which one to use.
Age can offer context but should not override the chart and the diaper’s fit. Pampers says newborn size is commonly used during the first month, but a fast-growing baby may move to Size 1 around 8 lb. That is a brand-specific estimate, not a deadline.

How to tell whether the diaper fits
Fasten the diaper as directed, then check the waistband, leg openings, coverage, and your baby’s comfort. Pampers says you should be able to fit two fingers under the waistband.
- Possible signs it is too small: red marks, a waistband that feels tight, tabs that do not reach the center, discomfort, or inadequate coverage of the bottom.
- Possible signs it is too large or otherwise a poor fit: gaps around the legs or waist, or sagging.
- Leaks: repeated leaks despite correct fastening can be a reason to reassess size and fit. A leak does not prove the diaper is too small; fit is only one possible factor.
Use these signals together rather than treating any single one as a definitive test. Pampers’ guide to when to size up.

What to do when your baby is between sizes
- Check the exact chart. Compare your baby’s current weight with the chart for the brand and product line on the package or manufacturer’s site.
- Assess the diaper while fastened. Look for comfortable waistband room, secure tabs, good coverage, and leg cuffs without gaps.
- Try the adjacent size if needed. When both sizes include your baby’s weight, compare how each one fits. Pampers advises keeping the smaller size if it remains comfortable and leak-free; move up if it feels tight or leaves marks.
- Recheck fastening and fit if leaks continue. A larger diaper can also leak if it gaps, so bigger is not automatically better.
If leakage or irritation continues, review fastening, fit, how promptly wet or dirty diapers are changed, and skin care. Seek medical advice when symptoms warrant it.
How many newborn diapers should you have?
Pampers estimates that newborns use about 8–12 diapers per day, or roughly 250–300 per month. This is a manufacturer planning estimate, not a guaranteed count. The NHS says young babies may need changing as many as 10–12 times a day and older babies around 6–8 times a day. These are different kinds of guidance: diaper use varies, and care guidance is not a target to wait for. Pampers’ size and planning guide; NHS guidance on changing a baby’s nappy.
Because babies grow at different rates and some move through newborn size quickly, avoid buying a large supply of one size before you know how it fits. Keep the brand’s weight guidance in mind, but let your baby’s actual fit determine when to use the next size.

If your baby has a diaper rash
A rash does not by itself mean the diaper is too small. The NHS lists several possible causes, including prolonged contact with urine or stool, infrequent changes or cleaning, rubbing, irritating soaps or wipes, diarrhea, and some less absorbent or less breathable diapers. Its general advice is to change wet or dirty diapers promptly, keep skin clean and dry, avoid fastening diapers too tightly, and make sure they fit properly. NHS guidance on nappy rash.
Contact a health visitor or GP if the rash does not go away, worsens or spreads, comes with a high temperature, or your baby seems very uncomfortable. A pharmacist may advise on home treatment for an uncomfortable rash. This guide cannot diagnose a rash or recommend treatment.

Disposable or reusable: what should parents weigh?
The NHS describes disposable and washable cloth nappies as options. Consider cost, convenience, and environmental impact for your household; cloth nappies can be washed according to their instructions, and a local laundry service may be available. The NHS guidance cited here does not quantify comparative costs or environmental effects, so there is no universal savings figure or impact claim to apply to every family.
