A CHEP pallet does not have an ordinary consumer resale price: CHEP says it owns its blue pooled pallets and does not sell or transfer them. Businesses access pallets through CHEP’s pooling service at customized rates. If you found one, arrange a return pickup rather than selling or discarding it.
What does “worth” mean for a CHEP pallet?
There are three different amounts people may mean by a pallet’s “value”: a sale price, the cost for a business to use the pooling service, or a charge under a customer contract if equipment is lost or destroyed. Those are not interchangeable.
- Resale price: CHEP US says it retains ownership of its blue pallets and does not sell or relinquish them. It says they cannot be bought, sold, traded, or discarded. - Lost or destroyed equipment charge: This is a matter of the applicable customer agreement, not a public market price for a pallet. The public US pages cited here do not state a standard per-pallet lost-equipment amount.
Can you sell a blue CHEP pallet?
CHEP’s stated US policy is that it owns its blue pooled pallets and does not transfer ownership. If a pallet is marked as CHEP property, do not treat it as yours to sell, trade, or discard. CHEP’s policy is the relevant reason; the pallet’s physical condition does not establish that ownership has changed.
What should you do with a CHEP pallet you found?
Arrange collection through CHEP’s US pickup request page. CHEP also lists 800-243-7872, option 5 for pickup requests. If you already have a CHEP business account, use myCHEP for account-related logistics; businesses seeking pallet service can request a customized quote through CHEP.

Does CHEP charge customers for a lost pallet?
A customer may have a contractual obligation for missing or damaged pooled equipment, but the amount depends on the relevant agreement and rate schedule. The public US pages cited here do not establish a current US per-pallet charge, so a specific dollar figure would be unsupported. Existing customers should check their CHEP agreement or contact CHEP customer care for the applicable terms.
CHEP Australia’s terms illustrate why the jurisdiction and contract matter: they describe compensation for lost equipment under applicable terms and rates, and distinguish destroyed equipment by reference to replacement cost determined by CHEP. How does CHEP’s pooling model work?
Rather than selling a pallet to each user, CHEP’s pooling service circulates equipment among businesses. CHEP says it collects pallets, inspects and repairs them as needed, then returns them to circulation. CHEP’s US pallet service
CHEP reported in a July 18, 2022 press release that its overall pool included 345 million pallets, crates, and containers. That company-reported historical figure describes the scale of the pool, not the monetary value of one pallet. In that release, Pathma Devraj, then identified as Director of Asset Management for CHEP Sub-Saharan Africa, said: “Unreturned CHEP pallets not only have a negative impact on the environment, but they also add costs to producers, retailers and ultimately the end consumers.” CHEP’s July 18, 2022 press release

What businesses should ask before requesting a quote
Because CHEP says its proposal is tailored to a business’s needs, a business evaluating the service should describe the operating requirements that drive its quote:
- Shipment origins and destinations
- Expected pallet volume and shipment frequency
- What collection, repair, and other service responsibilities are included
- How the agreement handles missing or destroyed equipment
Compare those terms with the business’s actual logistics needs. A like-for-like cost comparison with disposable pallets requires current figures for both options; the public CHEP information cited here does not provide a basis for inventing one.
