Digital marketing is becoming more automated, more spread across discovery channels and harder to measure with confidence. For businesses, the practical response is not to chase every new platform or hand campaigns over to AI. It is to set clear financial and customer goals, test where investment adds value, and build measurement and human review into the work.

The figures below distinguish reported U.S. advertising results for 2025 from forecasts for 2026 and expert-developed themes for the next five to ten years. None establishes a universally effective channel or a guaranteed path to growth.

What is changing in digital marketing?

Three shifts stand out: AI is moving into campaign workflows, customers can discover brands through search, social feeds and AI-generated answers, and U.S. advertising investment is growing across social, video, commerce media and creator content. At the same time, privacy constraints, fragmented platforms and signal loss make it harder to connect exposure to business outcomes.

AI is becoming part of campaign operations

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) says five of advertisers’ six top areas of increased focus in its 2026 outlook are AI-related. In its survey, two-thirds of buyers focused on agentic AI for ad buying and campaign execution, while 73% prioritized content optimized for AI-generated answers. These are survey findings about priorities—not rates of proven deployment, effectiveness or autonomous performance. IAB’s 2026 outlook

It helps to distinguish three levels of automation:

  • Assistance: AI drafts, analyzes or recommends; a person chooses what to use.
  • Constrained automation: a system performs a defined task, subject to specified limits or approval.
  • Agentic execution: a system plans and takes actions across parts of a campaign workflow.

Before expanding automation, identify the data it can access, the actions it can take, the person responsible for reviewing its work and the failure modes that matter. Set an objective such as qualified leads, profitable sales or retention—not simply more clicks or content—and compare results against that objective. The IAB findings signal growing buyer attention, not a guarantee that more autonomy will improve outcomes.

Discovery is no longer confined to conventional search

People may encounter a business through a search result, a social feed, a creator’s content or an AI-generated answer. In IAB’s U.S. 2025 revenue report, search—including AI search—accounted for $114.2 billion. In its 2026 outlook, 73% of surveyed marketers said they prioritized content optimized for AI-generated answers. These figures support preparing content for multiple discovery settings; they do not show that search is disappearing or that any particular technique guarantees a mention, citation or visit.

Make useful, accurate information easy to understand wherever a prospective customer encounters it. Keep brand claims consistent across owned pages and social profiles, and make important product, service and pricing details clear. Treat visibility in AI answers as one possible discovery outcome, not a substitute for measuring qualified visits and business results.

What the U.S. advertising figures say—and what they do not

IAB and PwC reported $294.6 billion in U.S. internet advertising revenue for 2025, up 13.9% year over year. Their report release says the figures draw on information reported directly to PwC by online advertising sellers plus public corporate data; PwC did not audit the information or provide assurance. These are U.S. category-level revenue figures, not evidence that an individual business will earn a return from advertising in any one channel. IAB and PwC’s 2025 internet advertising report release

U.S. category 2025 revenue Year-over-year change
Social $117.7 billion 32.6% growth
Search, including AI search $114.2 billion Not stated in the report release
Digital video $78 billion 25.4% growth
Commerce media $63.4 billion 18% growth

The dollar amounts are 2025 U.S. category revenues reported by IAB and PwC in 2026; the growth figures are the reported year-over-year changes for those categories. They describe market scale and direction, not the performance of a particular campaign or business.

2026 growth figures are forecasts, not realized results

IAB’s 2026 outlook projects U.S. ad-spend growth of 9.5% year over year, based on input from more than 200 brands and agency buyers. It forecasts 14.6% growth in social media ad spending, 13.8% in connected TV and 12.1% in commerce media. These are U.S. forecasts—not global results or promises about a company’s own sales. Creators are a material advertising category

IAB put U.S. creator advertising spend at $37 billion in 2025 and projected $44 billion for 2026. The first is a reported 2025 figure; the second is a forecast. IAB describes a direction toward always-on creator programs integrated with media operations and product development. Businesses considering such work can compare audience relevance, brand suitability, rights to use the content, disclosure practices, production capacity and measurable outcomes rather than assuming a large audience alone makes a partnership worthwhile. How should a business choose channels and set a budget?

Category growth can help explain where advertising investment is moving, but it cannot select a channel for a particular business. Use the same decision criteria for each option, then start with a test whose cost and success conditions are defined in advance.

  1. Set the business objective. Decide whether the investment is meant to generate awareness, acquire customers or retain them. Choose an outcome that corresponds to that objective.
  2. Identify the audience and discovery context. Consider who you need to reach and whether they are more likely to find you through search, social, video, creators or another setting.
  3. Check data use and consent. Establish what first-party data the activity needs and the basis on which it can be used.
  4. Estimate the full operating cost. Include media spend, creative and production effort, measurement, staff capability and any dependence on a platform—not just the visible ad price.
  5. Decide how you will judge incremental impact. Define what result would justify continuing, changing or stopping the test. Consider whether attribution alone is adequate or whether incrementality testing or marketing mix modeling is appropriate for the decision.
  6. Account for fit. Consider geography, sector, customer journey and how much your plan depends on one platform or source of data.

No universal best channel or channel-level ROI ranking is established by the available market figures. A growing category may be worth evaluating, but a business should expand investment only when its own objectives, costs and evidence support doing so.

Why measurement and privacy belong in the plan

In the IAB’s 2026 outlook, 72% of surveyed buyers focused on cross-platform measurement, up from 64% year over year. Separately, the IAB’s State of Data 2026 overview identifies privacy regulation, signal loss, platform-embedded optimization and fragmented data as factors that complicate connecting advertising exposure to outcomes. The overview discusses attribution, incrementality testing and marketing mix modeling, but does not establish one method as superior.

These methods answer different kinds of questions. Attribution assigns credit within the data and rules a system can observe. Incrementality testing asks whether an activity caused additional outcomes by comparing what happened with a suitable counterfactual. Marketing mix modeling estimates how marketing and other factors relate to business results across a broader period. Choose a method according to the decision, available data and cost of being wrong; where possible, compare more than one view rather than treating a platform’s reported credit as a complete account of impact. What longer-term marketing trends are experts watching?

The American Marketing Association’s 2026 Future Trends in Marketing Report identifies five forces for the next five to ten years. The report used a modified Delphi process with more than 30 marketing professionals convened from May through August 2025, alongside foresight elements from the Institute for the Future. The themes are expert-developed foresight, not measured probabilities or predictions that every organization will experience the same change.

  • The Age of Autonomous Agents: a possible structural shift toward systems that take on more connected tasks.
  • Consumer Discovery Shifts to Scroll: greater importance of discovery through feeds and social experiences.
  • Portfolio Careers and the Liquid Workforce: changing patterns in marketing work and talent.
  • Innovation Imperative in Sustainability: sustainability as a continuing innovation concern.
  • Building Brand Trust in a Fragmented World: the challenge of earning and maintaining trust across divided media and customer environments.

The report’s participants were primarily from North America, with additional global representation. These themes can help businesses consider scenarios and capabilities to build; they should not be treated as guaranteed timelines. What should marketers do next?

Build a plan that can adapt without confusing novelty for performance. Set a small number of business outcomes, evaluate channels on consistent criteria, and decide how impact will be measured before spending scales. Use AI first where its role and review process are clear; widen its authority only when the business can monitor the actions and consequences. Maintain a human owner for customer-facing claims and material campaign decisions.

Trust and data practices also affect whether personalization can deliver useful experiences. Salesforce’s current tenth-edition State of Marketing report page says 83% of surveyed marketers recognized a shift toward personalized, two-way messaging, while only one in four were satisfied with their use of data to support it. These are Salesforce-reported survey findings, not universal benchmarks; they point to a reported capability gap rather than proof that more data collection by itself creates better marketing.
