Flexjet began in 1995 as a Bombardier-linked fractional aircraft ownership venture. Bombardier later became its sole owner, then sold it in 2013 to a group led by Directional Aviation. Since then, Flexjet has broadened beyond fractional ownership through charter and jet-card services, international operations, acquisitions and aircraft commitments. The company’s own timeline documents that progression, though its announcements do not independently establish market rank or confirm that every announced investment or aircraft delivery was completed.

When was Flexjet founded?

Flexjet says it launched on May 15, 1995, as a venture of Bombardier Aerospace Group and entered the fractional aircraft ownership market. Its stated founding aim was to make business-jet access available to more companies and individuals. The company’s 2015 anniversary account says customers could buy aircraft shares in increments starting at one-sixteenth, representing 50 flight hours. Flexjet’s 2015 anniversary release and its 2024 account of its Bombardier heritage describe this early model.

Flexjet’s 2024 media kit identifies Bombardier Aerospace Group and AMR Corp as co-founders. It says AMR Combs withdrew from the partnership in 1998, leaving Bombardier as sole owner. That makes the early history more specific than simply saying Flexjet was “part of Bombardier”: it began as a partnership and then came under Bombardier’s sole ownership. The 2024 Flexjet media kit provides the company’s account.

How did Flexjet expand beyond fractional ownership?

Flexjet’s timeline records a sequence of service additions that broadened the business and its reach. The company says Bombardier’s acquisition of Skyjet preceded Flexjet’s entry into charter in 2000. It introduced Versatility Plus in 2003, extended service to Europe and Hawaii in 2004, and launched the Flexjet 25 jet card in 2006. These milestones show a shift from a single ownership model toward multiple ways to access private aviation; they do not, by themselves, establish how much revenue or customer activity each service generated.

Who bought Flexjet from Bombardier?

In September 2013, Flexjet announced that a group led by Directional Aviation Capital had agreed to buy the company from Bombardier. The announcement described an associated Bombardier aircraft order of up to 245 jets, valued at approximately $5.2 billion. Both figures were announced terms, not evidence that every aircraft was delivered. Flexjet’s September 5, 2013 announcement is the source for that proposed order.

A separate Flexjet media-kit timeline lists an open order in 2013 of 265 aircraft with a potential value of $5.6 billion. Those figures differ from the September announcement’s maximum of 245 aircraft and approximately $5.2 billion. The publications do not explain the discrepancy, so the figures should remain tied to their respective sources rather than treated as interchangeable or combined.

What happened to Flight Options?

After the ownership change, Flexjet continued to develop its services and fleet. Its timeline records a Gulfstream order in 2014. In 2015, it launched Red Label, which the company describes as featuring dedicated crews and artisan interiors, and consolidated Flight Options under the Flexjet brand. The timeline also lists an Embraer Legacy 450 order and an order for Aerion AS2 aircraft; Flexjet says the AS2 program did not come to fruition. These were distinct developments, and an order or brand announcement should not be read as proof of later delivery or program completion.

Flexjet reported that fractional sales in the first quarter of 2015 were 70% higher than in the first quarter of 2014. This is the company’s year-over-year comparison, not an independently verified measure of the wider private-aviation market. The same 2015 anniversary release also quoted chairman Kenn Ricci saying the company had become “bigger, more global and more technology-driven.”

How did Flexjet grow internationally and through acquisitions?

Flexjet’s company timeline records European operations built through the acquisitions of FlairJet and SIRIO in 2016, followed by its acquisition of PrivateFly in 2018. It also lists Embraer orders in 2019. These milestones indicate that expansion involved both company acquisitions and aircraft commitments, rather than only organic growth. The timeline establishes what Flexjet reports, but does not quantify each acquisition’s contribution to operations or results.

For 2023, Flexjet reports that its year-end fleet exceeded 270 aircraft and that it had 1,300 pilots and more than 4,000 employees across Flexjet and sister companies. The company also says it acquired Constant Aviation and Flying Colours Corp. These are company-reported figures and descriptions; they should not be mistaken for independently audited measures of the company’s size or market position.

What are Flexjet’s latest announced developments?

Flexjet’s timeline records a new terminal project at Farnborough in 2024. For 2025, its 30th-anniversary year, the company lists an announced $800 million equity investment, a Scottsdale terminal project and an agreement with Embraer covering 182 aircraft valued at $7 billion. These are announcements or timeline claims, not proof that the investment was completed, the terminal projects opened, or all aircraft were delivered. Flexjet’s official history timeline presents these milestones.

How to understand Flexjet’s history

Flexjet’s history can be read in three phases: a fractional-ownership venture founded with Bombardier and AMR; Bombardier’s period of sole ownership; and the Directional-led era, marked by service expansion, brand consolidation, international acquisitions and large aircraft commitments. The company’s own sources are useful for establishing what Flexjet says it launched, acquired or announced. They do not provide a consistent independent record of market share, relative ranking or the completion of every announced transaction and delivery.
