A dealer has advertised a 2013 rear-wheel-drive BMW F10 M5 for $35,999, making the headline’s roughly $35,000 price plausible for one specific car. That is an asking price—not evidence of a typical market value—and the listing may change or sell. Treat it as a starting point for comparing similar cars, not a budget guarantee.
What the $35,999 listing actually tells you
The Little Speed Shop listing identifies its car as stock #080426: a 2013 BMW M5 with a 4.4-liter S63 twin-turbo V8, seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission, rear-wheel drive, and 65,000 miles. The seller lists equipment including navigation, a head-up display, four-zone climate control, heated and cooled front seats, and a surround-view camera. These are seller-provided details; confirm the car’s VIN, options, mileage, title, condition, history, and availability directly with the seller. View the listing.
One advertised car cannot establish what F10 M5s generally cost, and $35,999 is not necessarily the final transaction price or the total cost to own. The listing does not provide a nationwide average. Before deciding whether the price is attractive, compare cars with similar model years, mileage, condition, service history, title status, equipment, and modifications.
What an F10 M5 is—and why it is rear-wheel drive
The F10 is the fifth-generation BMW M5. BMW says the generation appeared in 2011 and reached U.S. showrooms in 2012. Its launch specification included a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 rated at 560 hp and 500 lb-ft, paired with a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission sending power to the rear wheels. Specifications can vary by year and market, so verify the exact car rather than assuming every listing has identical equipment. BMW’s F10 M5 launch information.

Do not confuse the F10’s rear-wheel-drive layout with the next generation’s selectable rear-drive mode. BMW calls the 2018 F90 the sixth-generation M5 and identifies it as the first M5 with M xDrive. The F90 starts in all-wheel drive; its 2WD mode disconnects the front axle and is available with Dynamic Stability Control switched off. That is a selectable mode on an all-wheel-drive F90, not the F10’s standard drivetrain architecture. BMW describes 2WD as intended for experienced, highly skilled drivers. How to judge an F10 listing before you commit
A low asking price can be outweighed by deferred maintenance, damage, modifications, or a condition that needs expensive attention. Compare cars across the factors that affect both value and near-term spending:
Rank #2
- Powerful M sedan - The BMW F90 M5 Competition combines everyday suitability with motorsport feeling in 1:43 scale
- Distinctive play of colours - Bold green meets black roof, mirrors and rims for dynamic contrasts
- Sporty design features - Large air intakes, wide bumpers, side trim openings and strong shoulder line
- Finely crafted - Black multi-spoke wheels with red calipers, clear headlights and precise body joints
- Solido - Model Cars for Home: Since 1932, we have stood for detailed diecast models of iconic vehicles - from classic vintage cars to modern sports cars, for collectors and automotive enthusiasts worldwide
- Identity and history: Verify the VIN, title status, accident history, mileage, model year, and whether the car is an LCI. The F10 facelift was announced in May 2013 for 2014 model-year cars, so check the actual model year rather than relying on a registration date. PistonHeads’ F10 M5 buying guide.
- Maintenance and repairs: Request service records and ask about completed repairs, warning messages, and software updates for the engine and transmission. The buying guide notes that drivetrain warnings or shuddering can have multiple possible causes, including fuel, sensors, modules, or injectors; a symptom alone does not identify the fault.
- Condition and wear: Inspect for leaks, deferred maintenance, tire wear, and brake wear. Check exact wheel and tire fitment against the individual car’s configuration, market, load and speed ratings, and intended use. Tire sizes vary by wheel and configuration, and rear tires may wear faster.
- Equipment and changes: Confirm options and disclose modifications. Factory equipment and modifications can affect comparability, repair needs, and resale.
Before purchase: a practical inspection sequence
- Ask the seller for the VIN and available maintenance, repair, and title documentation; compare the VIN on the car with the paperwork.
- Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with an independent BMW M specialist. Ask the inspector to look for leaks, deferred maintenance, tire and brake condition, and evidence of modifications or damage.
- Have suitable diagnostic equipment scan all control modules. Review stored or historical warnings rather than treating a dashboard message—or the absence of one—as a complete diagnosis.
- Ask whether applicable engine and transmission software updates were performed, and request documentation where available.
- Confirm the car’s specific wheel and tire fitment and inspect the tires for condition and appropriate ratings before using size alone to shop for replacements.
The PistonHeads guide is secondary buying advice, not a diagnosis of any individual car. A qualified inspection can help identify issues, but no listing or inspection makes a used performance car risk-free.

Use the asking price as one line in a purchase budget, not the whole number. Separately account for any applicable taxes and registration costs, insurance, immediate maintenance or repairs identified by an inspection, and future consumables such as tires and brakes. The $35,999 listing does not establish those costs, and they will depend on your location, the specific vehicle, and its condition. If a purchase only works financially when the car needs no repairs, the budget leaves little room for uncertainty.
