The Games Fund announced a $50 million early-stage video-game fund on April 15, 2021, targeting studios in the United States and Europe. The figure described the fund’s reported raise—not money available to every developer—and its investment sizes and geographic allocations were plans stated at the time, not confirmed results.

What The Games Fund announced in April 2021

GamesBeat reported that the fund had raised nearly $50 million after initially setting out to raise $30 million. Co-founder and fund manager Maria Kochmola said the final number was expected later that summer, so the April report should be read as an announcement-time account, not a current fundraising update. The report described the fund as based between Moscow and Los Angeles.

Kochmola characterized it as “the first focused fund in Eastern Europe.” That is her description, not an independently established comparison with every other regional fund.

What the fund said it planned to invest

The 2021 report described an early-stage strategy spanning pre-seed through Series A. Its figures were expected investment levels and allocation targets:

Announcement-time plan What was reported
Initial investment About $2 million per company, as an estimate reported by GamesBeat in 2021.
Follow-on or co-investment Up to $5 million, according to the fund’s reported expectation in 2021.
Mobile allocation Kochmola expected 70% of the fund to go to mobile.
Geographic allocation The report described an expected 60% allocation to Eastern Europe, with the remainder in the United States and Europe.
Other platforms The fund could co-invest in PC and console studios, according to the 2021 report.

These are projections attributed to the announcement, not evidence that the fund ultimately invested those amounts or achieved those portfolio shares. See the GamesBeat report of April 15, 2021 for the original account.

How the fund describes its focus now

The Games Fund’s current website says it invests in “future leaders: game developers, gaming technologies, and services.” Its current materials describe an early-stage gaming focus that includes mobile and PC/console developers, game technology, and a global strategy with stated primary geographic focuses. The official site and news page also list portfolio investments and later developments, including activity in 2024 and 2025. These are the fund’s own descriptions and announcements, rather than independent performance reporting.

The current resources page lists a typical initial investment of $500,000–$2 million, with follow-on capacity. That is current published guidance, accessed October 8, 2026; it should not be substituted for the roughly $2 million initial investment expectation reported in 2021 or treated as guaranteed terms for any applicant.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell founders

The raise indicated that a dedicated investor intended to back early-stage game companies across the United States and Europe, with particular emphasis on Eastern Europe and mobile games in its stated 2021 plan. It did not guarantee funding to any studio: the reported per-company amounts were expectations, and the fund also anticipated follow-ons and co-investments.

The available public information does not establish how much of the original $50 million remains uncommitted, when that fund’s investment period ended, or whether its 2021 allocation forecasts were achieved. Later portfolio listings and current check-size guidance show ongoing public-facing activity, but do not answer those questions about the original fundraise.

Founders considering an application should use the fund’s current resources and FAQ for its latest published guidance and materials, and its official site for its present mandate and portfolio. The news page records the fund’s own later announcements.
