The Evolution of the Boeing 737 at American Airlines

American’s 737 story runs from 737-800 service beginning in 1999 through a major narrowbody renewal, the MAX grounding and a 100th MAX delivery in 2026.

American Airlines began operating the Boeing 737-800 in 1999. Since then, the 737 has shifted from a core narrowbody workhorse to part of a large fleet-renewal strategy, weathered the 737 MAX grounding, and continued to grow: Boeing reported that American took delivery of its 100th MAX in May 2026. The dated record establishes the 737-800 and MAX milestones, but not a complete history of every 737 variant American has flown or a current fleet count by model.

When did American Airlines start flying the 737?

Boeing says American began operating the 737-800 in 1999. The aircraft became a staple on the airline’s domestic and short-haul international routes, according to Boeing’s 2026 retrospective: American Airlines Takes Delivery of 100th 737 MAX.

That date answers when the documented 737-800 era began; it does not establish when American first operated any 737 model. The available dated records here do not provide a full pre-1999 variant chronology.

How did the 737 fit American’s fleet-renewal plans?

New 737-800s and cabin changes

In a 2011 announcement, American said deliveries of new 737-800s had begun in April 2009. The airline described a Sky Interior-equipped configuration with 160 seats: 16 in First Class and 144 in Economy. It also said it was updating its earlier 737 fleet to create a more consistent cabin. Those figures describe the configuration in that historical announcement, not every 737-800 then or now: American Airlines Introduces New Boeing 737-800 Aircraft with Sky Interior Features.

The 2011 narrowbody order

On July 20, 2011, American announced a plan covering 460 narrowbody aircraft across the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families. Its Boeing portion included 200 additional 737-family aircraft, among them a planned re-engined version, as well as options. The airline presented the broader renewal as a way to replace and simplify its narrowbody fleet. Boeing’s separate announcement described a commitment for 100 re-engined 737s and options for 60, subject to program approval; Boeing also said American had taken delivery of 156 737-800s by then.

The plans show the 737’s role in a two-family narrowbody strategy, rather than a stand-alone purchase. American linked the decision to fleet replacement and efficiency goals; those were the company’s stated aims, not a present-day independent comparison of aircraft performance.

What did American’s merger-era fleet snapshot show?

American’s factsheet reported its fleet and order book as of December 31, 2012. It listed 195 737-800s in American Airlines’ mainline fleet and 100 MAX-family aircraft in its order book. In a separate entry, the factsheet listed 32 737-400s in US Airways’ mainline fleet. These are distinct company and fleet entries at that reporting date; the US Airways count should not be added to American’s 737-800 total as though it described American Airlines-operated aircraft at the time.

Why did American order the 737 MAX, and what changed after the grounding?

The MAX followed the re-engined 737 path announced as part of the 2011 plan. American’s 2012 factsheet later showed 100 MAX-family aircraft in its order book. The order commitment and the aircraft’s operation are different milestones: an order-book entry does not establish that those aircraft were already in service.

Following the MAX grounding, American’s 2020 update said it anticipated returning the aircraft to scheduled service on June 4, subject to certification, and planned a gradual phase-in. That was the airline’s expectation at the time, not a current status notice. See American’s 2020 MAX return-to-service update.

Which 737 types does American fly, and what do the later milestones show?

MAX 8 operation and MAX 10 order

In March 2024, American announced an order for 85 737 MAX 10s, including the conversion of 30 existing MAX 8 orders. The airline said it then operated the MAX 8 and was looking ahead to MAX 10 certification. The announcement confirms an order, not that MAX 10s had entered service: American’s March 2024 aircraft order announcement.

The 100th MAX delivery

In May 2026, Boeing reported delivery of American’s 100th 737 MAX during the airline’s centennial week. Boeing also reported that American then had nearly 140 Boeing aircraft, consisting of 737 MAX and 787 models, still on order. That combined order figure is not a 737-only total. Boeing’s announcement includes a comment from American Managing Director of Fleet Jay Hancock: “Our longstanding partnership with Boeing and now the delivery of our 100th MAX aircraft has allowed us to expand our network for our customers.” Read Boeing’s 100th MAX delivery announcement.

American also announced a centennial livery on a Boeing 737 and said airplane models of that livery were among its merchandise. The announcement does not establish whether a particular model remains available: American’s centennial livery announcement.

How many 737s does American Airlines have?

The dated records establish specific milestones, not a current full active-fleet breakdown by variant. The 195 737-800 figure is American’s mainline fleet count as of December 31, 2012; the 100th MAX delivery is a May 2026 milestone, not a total fleet count. The 2024 MAX 10 order likewise does not establish how many MAX 10s are currently in service. A current answer requires a dated fleet listing that distinguishes aircraft operated from aircraft ordered.
