Not necessarily. Dairy Queen’s newsroom said in 2019 that Blizzard Treats were “served upside down or the next one’s free at participating locations.” The words “participating locations” limit the promise, and the current official customer-service guidance does not set out detailed, chain-wide terms. Ask the restaurant where you order what it offers.
What Dairy Queen’s guarantee actually says
In a January 7, 2019 newsroom release, International Dairy Queen wrote: “Blizzard Treats are made to order and are so thick that they are served upside down or the next one’s free at participating locations.” The release was announcing other promotions; this sentence is the company’s published wording about the upside-down offer.
That wording does not establish that every Dairy Queen participates. It also says “the next one’s free,” not that the customer is automatically entitled to an immediate refund or a free replacement on the spot.
Does the offer apply at every Dairy Queen today?
The available current official guidance does not provide detailed, chain-wide guarantee terms or confirm universal participation. A January 9, 2025 Daily Dot report said whether a location performs and honors the flip test depends on that location. That is secondary reporting, not a current corporate statement or a legal ruling.

Dairy Queen’s customer-service page says its restaurants are independently owned and operated franchises. It directs customers with comments about a particular restaurant to that location’s independent franchise operator. Corporate feedback may be forwarded to the operator.
What to do if your Blizzard is not served upside down
- Ask before ordering: Check with the restaurant whether it participates in the upside-down offer and what it will do if your Blizzard is not flipped.
- Raise the issue with the restaurant: If there is a problem with a specific visit, contact that restaurant’s independent franchise operator. Dairy Queen’s customer-service page also offers a corporate feedback route that may forward comments to the operator.
- Confirm the remedy: Ask what resolution the location will provide. The historical wording refers to the next Blizzard being free, but the reviewed sources do not establish detailed eligibility rules or whether a particular store offers a coupon, refund, replacement, or another solution.
What is not established
- That every U.S. Dairy Queen location participates.
- Which flavors, sizes, orders, or circumstances qualify.
- Whether a store must provide an immediate refund or replacement.
- Whether a customer can claim a free subsequent Blizzard without first checking with the location.
Because the published promise is limited to participating locations and the detailed terms are not set out in current official guidance, the restaurant where you place the order is the best source for its current practice.
