Possibly. Costco’s published U.S. merchandise policy does not set a blanket three-year cutoff for all products, but the item’s category and any listed exceptions matter. Costco limits returns of specified electronics and major appliances to 90 days from receipt, and some products are restricted or nonrefundable. For an item bought three years ago, check the applicable category and ask Costco to assess the specific purchase.
What Costco’s policy says about returns after three years
Costco states, “We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price*, with the following exceptions:” The published U.S. policy does not specify a general three-year deadline for merchandise outside those exceptions. That does not guarantee that Costco will accept every old return: its policy must be considered alongside the product category and the details of the purchase. Check these exceptions before making the trip
Specified electronics and major appliances: 90 days
Costco’s 90-day return limit applies to the categories it lists, measured from the date the member received the merchandise. Those categories include televisions, projectors, specified major appliances, computers, touchscreen tablets, smart wearables, cameras, drones, camcorders, MP3 players, and cellular phones. Check the policy’s exact list rather than assuming that every electronic device or appliance is included.
Other restricted or nonreturnable items
- Custom-made or custom-installed products: Products made to a member’s unique specifications cannot be returned or refunded, except for warranty repair or replacement when the product fails to meet specifications.
- Diamonds of 1.00 carat or larger: Costco requires the original IGI and/or GIA paperwork. It describes issuing a Jewelry Credit Memo and inspecting the diamond for authenticity.
- Cigarettes and alcohol: Returns are not accepted where prohibited by law.
- Tires and batteries: These may have product-specific limited warranties because of their limited useful life expectancy.
- Nonrefundable categories: Costco names airline and live-performance event items, precious metals, shop cards, and gift-card and ticket items.
- Items with separate instructions: Costco directs members to specific guidance for contact lenses, eyeglasses, freight-delivered items, and hearing aids.

How to start a return based on where you bought it
Bought at a Costco warehouse
Take the item to the returns counter at any Costco warehouse. Costco says, “It helps if you have the receipt or original product packaging, but it may not be necessary to process your return.” Bring both if you have them, but their absence does not automatically mean you cannot ask about a return. You can return an online purchase at a Costco warehouse or start the process online. Sign in to Costco.com, open Orders & Returns, and select Return or Replace Items. What to do with a three-year-old item
- Identify the exact product and category. Check Costco’s policy for a time limit, exclusion, warranty, or separate instructions that apply.
- Use the route that matches the purchase. For a warehouse purchase, take it to the returns counter at any warehouse. For a Costco.com order, return it at a warehouse or use Orders & Returns and select Return or Replace Items.
- Bring whatever records and packaging you have. For a warehouse return, Costco says a receipt or original packaging can help but may not be necessary.
- Ask Costco Member Services about the specific item and transaction. The published policy explains the general framework, but it cannot determine whether Costco will accept an unspecified item bought three years ago.
