Those figures are not the same as his annual-pay ranking: a separate 2026 NFL.com list, using Spotrac average annual value figures, puts Mahomes at $63.1 million per year.
There is no single apples-to-apples all-time ranking across total value, average annual value, and guarantees. The contract measure matters—and so does whether a figure covers a new extension or the full contract horizon.
What is the biggest contract in NFL history?
By the reported stated total value, Mahomes’ reworked Kansas City Chiefs contract is the biggest figure established here: $504.75 million, according to NFL Network’s 2026 report. The report says incentives and escalators could lift the maximum to $522.25 million. That maximum is conditional, not guaranteed compensation. The report also gives a $64 million annual average beginning in 2027, a different measure from total value. NFL Network’s 2026 report
These figures describe a reported rework of Mahomes’ contract, not a new amount to add to the 2020 extension. The terms and rankings can change as contracts are revised, so this is a dated record rather than a permanent ranking.

How the leading NFL contract figures compare
| Player | Team | Year and scope | Stated value | Annual value | Guarantees | Incentives or escalators |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patrick Mahomes | Kansas City Chiefs | 2026 rework; reported contract terms | $504.75 million | $64 million beginning in 2027, per NFL Network | Not stated in the 2026 report cited here | Maximum reported value is $522.25 million with incentives and escalators |
| Patrick Mahomes | Kansas City Chiefs | 2020 extension; 10-year extension within a 12-year contract horizon | $450 million in new extension value; $503 million maximum across the 12-year horizon | Not stated in the cited report | $477 million in guarantee mechanisms, as described in the report | The $503 million figure is the reported maximum |
The 2020 figures are historical terms from NFL.com’s report at the time, not an additional contract to stack on top of the 2026 rework. The report distinguishes the 10-year, $450 million extension from the $503 million maximum over the broader 12-year horizon. NFL.com’s 2020 report
Who has the highest annual contract value?
A 2026 NFL.com ranking based on Spotrac average annual value (AAV) lists Mahomes first at $63.1 million, followed by Dak Prescott at $60 million. Matthew Stafford, Josh Allen, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, and Baker Mayfield are each listed at $55 million. These are annual-value figures, not total contract values, and the list’s order is attributed to Spotrac. NFL.com’s 2026 annual-value ranking

The $63.1 million AAV in that ranking and NFL Network’s reported $64 million annual average beginning in 2027 are separate reported figures. They come from different sources and describe different contract comparisons; neither should be substituted for the $504.75 million stated total.
Why NFL contract records depend on the measure
Total value and new money
Total value may describe the headline value of an agreement, while “new money” isolates the additional value in an extension. A contract headline can also include existing years in a larger contract horizon. Mahomes’ 2020 terms show why scope matters: the reported $450 million applied to the 10-year extension, while $503 million was the maximum across 12 years.

Average annual value
AAV or APY divides stated contract value by its term, but the result is not a schedule of yearly cash payments. A ranking sorted by AAV answers who has the highest average value per year under that source’s method—not who has the largest total deal or the most cash paid in a particular season.
Guarantees
“Guaranteed” can refer to different protections. NFL Football Operations explains that compensation may be guaranteed for skill, salary-cap treatment, and/or injury. Money protected against all three is fully guaranteed at signing; protection against only one or two is partial. A stated guarantee amount therefore needs its guarantee type and timing to be meaningful. NFL Football Operations’ explanation of contract language

Incentives and escalators
A maximum value that depends on incentives or escalators is a ceiling, not an amount the player is certain to earn. Keep the base stated value and conditional maximum separate, as in the 2026 Mahomes report.

Nominal contract dollars are not directly equivalent across eras: the league’s salary cap changes the financial context in which a deal is signed. NFL Football Operations lists the cap at $301.2 million for 2026, up from $279.2 million in 2025. Those figures help contextualize current contracts but do not, on their own, provide a complete historical comparison. NFL Football Operations’ 2026 salary-cap announcement
How to judge an NFL contract record
- Choose one ranking measure. For a headline total-value record, sort by stated total value; for annual pay, use AAV/APY; for protection, compare guarantees and specify their type.
- Check what years the number covers. Establish whether it is an extension alone or a maximum spanning the full contract horizon.
- Separate unconditional and conditional money. Do not treat an incentives-based maximum as guaranteed compensation.
- Date the claim. Reworks and new deals can change both record claims and annual-value rankings.
- Use cap context for historical comparisons. A nominal dollar total signed under one cap environment is not directly equivalent to the same total under another.
The available cited contract reports and annual-value list establish important current and historical Mahomes figures, but not a definitive league-wide all-time ranking across every measure. A precise record claim should say what is being ranked and which contract scope it covers.
