In the two published 2025 rankings, Food Network named Omaha Steaks Whole Basted Turkey its overall winner after testing 10 mail-order turkeys, while PureWow chose Fossil Farms Whole Bird Turkey. Those are distinct editorial picks, not a single universal best. The right choice depends on whether you want a raw whole bird, a cooked option, or a smaller breast—and whether the seller can deliver to your address when you need it.
Which online turkeys stood out in 2025?
Food Network reported testing 10 mail-order turkeys and selected Omaha Steaks Whole Basted Turkey as its best overall. Its category picks included a free-range bird, a fresh bird, a smoked turkey, a pre-cooked fried turkey and a value pick. PureWow published a separate ranking with a different overall choice. The lists reflect each publisher’s own criteria; they should not be read as a head-to-head comparison.

Choose the format that fits your meal and workload
Whole bird or breast
A whole turkey provides the traditional centerpiece and both white and dark meat, but its bones and cooking needs affect the usable yield. A bone-in breast can be a more manageable option for a smaller gathering or for people who prefer white meat. Food Network quotes Chef Claude Booker, CEO and founder of Soul Food Starters, recommending eight ounces of turkey per person for a first plate. Booker also says a family of four could do well with a six- to eight-pound bone-in breast, which he estimates would provide about two and a half pounds of cooked turkey. Those are his portion recommendations, not universal serving guarantees.

Raw, smoked, fried or roasted
A raw bird gives you more control over seasoning and cooking, but requires thawing if frozen and enough time to roast it safely. A smoked or fried turkey has already had substantial cooking and flavoring work done. PureWow described Harry & David’s Oven-Roasted Turkey as ready to heat and serve; check the product’s own directions for the precise reheating steps. Convenience can mean less control over seasoning and finish than cooking a raw bird yourself.
Fresh or frozen
A fresh turkey avoids thawing, but freshness does not guarantee a particular delivery date or shelf life; check the seller’s handling and storage instructions. A frozen bird can be ordered ahead if you have freezer space and can plan thawing time. Seller descriptions such as free-range, pasture-raised or antibiotic-free are production claims, not a substitute for checking the bird’s format, size and delivery terms.

How much turkey should you order?
Serving estimates differ because they are planning rules, not precise predictions. Food Network’s 2025 buyer guidance suggests 1¼–1½ pounds of whole bird per person, accounting for bones and shrinkage, and says a 10–12-pound bird can serve six to eight people. Whole Foods Market’s current guide uses a more generous rule of thumb of 2 pounds per person, with examples of 12–14 pounds for six people and 20–24 pounds for twelve.
Use the lower or higher estimate in light of appetite, side dishes and how much leftover turkey you want. A whole bird’s listed weight includes bones, so it is not the same as the weight of cooked meat you will serve.

What the 2025 offers cost—and why those figures are dated
On November 19, 2025, ABC News reported ButcherBox options of 14–18 pounds for $95 and 18–20 pounds for $105, both with free shipping. The same report listed Whole Foods fresh whole turkeys starting at $2.99 per pound and Williams Sonoma’s chilled, made-to-order Willie Bird turkey starting at $149.95, with three size bands. These are dated examples of 2025 offers, not current prices or proof of availability for another season.
The seller pages available for Ferndale Market and Grass Roots Farmers’ Cooperative describe their offerings and shipping or thawing practices, but do not establish that 2026 holiday inventory, dates or prices match prior seasons. For any future holiday purchase, confirm the current listing rather than budgeting from a past seasonal price.

Plan thawing and cooking for a frozen raw bird
Allow enough time to thaw
Whole Foods Market calls refrigerator thawing the most reliable method: keep the turkey in its packaging on a tray on the lowest refrigerator shelf and allow one full day per five pounds. Its cold-water method calls for a leakproof wrapper, cold water changed every 30 minutes, and about 30 minutes of thawing per pound. Grass Roots Farmers’ Cooperative gives similar seller instructions: 24 hours per 4–5 pounds in the refrigerator or 30 minutes per pound in cold water. Follow the instructions supplied with your turkey and current food-safety guidance; do not treat a delivery date as a thawing plan.
Use a thermometer rather than a time estimate alone
For a raw bird, Food Network recommends an instant-read thermometer, a sturdy roasting pan with rack and a large cutting board. It cautions against relying only on a pop-up timer or time-per-pound formula. Use a thermometer to check the turkey according to current food-safety guidance and the product’s cooking instructions. A pan and thermometer are supporting tools, not reasons to choose one seller over another.
