How Billionaires Travel: Private Jets, Yachts, Advisors, and More

Billionaires do not travel one way. Private jets, yachts, luxury hotels, and expert advisors can offer flexibility, privacy, and tailored experiences, but available surveys and market figures do not describe every billionaire.

Billionaires do not travel according to one template. Some use private aircraft or yachts for control over timing, privacy, and routing; others fly commercially and rely on expert advisors to arrange the parts of a trip that matter most to them. Surveys of luxury and affluent travelers offer useful clues, but they are not surveys of billionaires as a group. The clearest pattern is a premium on time, personalization, privacy, and access—not a single required mode of transport.

Luxury travel is not the same as billionaire travel

“Luxury traveler” covers a much wider group than billionaires. In its 2024 State of Travel Survey, McKinsey defined luxury travelers as people who spent an average of at least $500 per night on lodging. The survey included 5,061 travelers in China, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and was fielded from February 27 to March 11, 2024. McKinsey reported that 35% of the luxury-travel market had net worths between $100,000 and $1 million.

Those findings describe a spending-defined segment, not the habits of billionaires. McKinsey reports different tendencies by wealth tier: high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) tend to trust boutique agents and seek privacy; very-high-net-worth individuals (VNWIs) are more likely to favor large suites and immersive experiences; and ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHWNIs) tend toward personalized service, quiet luxury, and remote destinations. These are survey-based tendencies, not rules for every traveler. As Virtuoso CEO Matthew D. Upchurch told McKinsey, “’Luxury’ is an overused word, and not just in travel. People might try to quantify it and define it according to spending amounts. But to me, it’s more nuanced than that.” McKinsey’s survey scope and findings; Upchurch’s interview.

How the main travel options differ

Option What it can offer What the available figures establish
Private aviation Flexible departure times and routing, privacy, and potential access to airports closer to a destination. Knight Frank recorded 874 private jets sold for US$22.7 billion in 2024. That is market activity, not a count of billionaire travelers or a measure of what an individual spends. Knight Frank, The Wealth Report 2025.
First-class or other commercial flights Scheduled routes and airline service; an advisor can coordinate flights with hotels, transfers, and other trip details. The cited sources do not establish how often billionaires choose commercial flights or what they typically pay.
Yachts and cruises Privacy, time on the water, and itineraries that can include coastal or remote destinations. A cruise or yacht journey may be part of a larger trip. Knight Frank recorded 131 sales of yachts priced at US$10 million or more, totaling US$3.6 billion, in 2024; the average price was US$27 million. These are sales figures, not the cost of a particular trip. Knight Frank, The Wealth Report 2025.
Luxury hotels and bespoke stays Suites, tailored service, and experiences arranged around the traveler’s interests and schedule. McKinsey’s luxury-traveler definition is based on lodging spend, not net worth. It does not establish the typical accommodation budget of a billionaire. McKinsey’s survey findings.

The most useful comparison is not simply “private versus public.” It is whether an option solves a real constraint: a multi-stop itinerary, a need for privacy, a remote destination, or a preference for a highly tailored experience. The evidence here does not establish one standard itinerary or annual travel budget for billionaires.

Why some wealthy travelers use private aircraft

Private aviation can make departure times and routes more flexible than a scheduled airline itinerary. For travelers coordinating several homes, business commitments, or stops in different locations, that flexibility can reduce time spent fitting a trip to a public schedule. Privacy and the ability to coordinate the journey with ground transport or a yacht can also matter.

That does not mean every wealthy traveler owns or charters a jet. Knight Frank’s 2025 report records 874 private jets sold for US$22.7 billion in 2024, compared with 854 jets worth US$21.2 billion in 2023. The report’s figures, compiled with Aerodynamic Advisory and other specialist sources, describe aircraft sales; they do not show how many buyers were billionaires, how frequently the aircraft flew, or how many people used them.

First-class commercial travel remains a different option: it follows airline schedules and routes, while private flying can offer more control over departure and routing. The cited sources do not provide a representative comparison of how often billionaires choose either mode, so claims that they universally avoid commercial airlines are not supported.

How yachts and cruises fit into a trip

A yacht can serve as transport, accommodation, and a private setting for time on the water. A cruise offers a different arrangement: a planned voyage with onboard services and a set itinerary, which may still be highly tailored at the luxury end. Mastercard’s 2024 affluent-travel report describes private yacht tours, luxury cruises, private jets, and helicopters among the options affluent travelers use. It also characterizes affluent travel as increasingly personalized and private, and notes that business and leisure trips may be combined.

Market sales provide context for the scale of yacht ownership, not a price list for travel. Knight Frank reported 131 sales of yachts priced at US$10 million or more in 2024, totaling US$3.6 billion, with an average sale price of US$27 million. The comparable 2023 total was US$5 billion across 133 yachts. Neither the transaction totals nor average sale price tell a reader what it costs to charter a yacht or take a particular cruise.

Some luxury hospitality brands also combine accommodation and transport in branded journeys. McKinsey cites Aman’s expansion into cruise expeditions and jet journeys as an example. That example does not establish current availability, prices, or booking terms. Mastercard, Affluent Travel 2024; McKinsey on advisors and luxury travel experiences.

Why travel advisors still matter

More money does not eliminate the work of planning a complicated trip. McKinsey reports that luxury travelers continue to use advisors for transactional details and personalized service, rather than handling every booking through online platforms. An advisor may coordinate flights, lodging, ground transfers, experiences, and changes across a multi-stop itinerary. That can be valuable whether a traveler flies privately or commercially.

Mastercard’s report also describes affluent trips as personalized and often blended with business travel. More than half of affluent travelers in a cited finding said they seek meaningful travel experiences rather than shopping and souvenirs. Because Mastercard’s report draws on its own data and findings from other survey publishers, that percentage should be understood as a finding about the cited affluent-traveler research—not as a measure of billionaire preferences.

In practice, bespoke planning can mean choosing a quieter destination, arranging an immersive experience, or adapting a trip around work and family commitments. It is a service approach, not proof that every individual in a wealth category wants the same kind of trip.

Privacy, personalization, and access are priorities—not guarantees

Private transport and high-touch planning can give travelers more control over who is on an itinerary, when they depart, and which experiences they book. Remote destinations, larger suites, or privately arranged tours may also offer a level of access or seclusion that a standard package does not. The trade-off is that these options require more coordination and may involve large asset or service costs; a market sale price cannot be treated as an individual travel bill.

Privacy is not absolute. Publicly tracked aircraft or vessel movements may be incomplete, and an arranged experience cannot make every destination or interaction exclusive. Nor does wealth alone determine how someone travels: purpose, schedule, personal preference, and the trip itself all shape the choice.

What is known about the environmental footprint

Private aircraft and superyachts can have substantial emissions, but estimates need to be read with their sample and method in view. Oxfam’s October 2024 report, Carbon Inequality Kills, examined investments, private jets, and superyachts associated with a sample of the world’s 50 richest people. It identified jets among 23 of those 50 individuals and notes that aircraft can be difficult to identify or track publicly.

For 2023, Oxfam estimated that the identified private jets emitted an average of 2,074 tonnes of carbon per year per individual. It also reported an average of 184 flights and 425 airborne hours for those individuals that year. These are estimates for the report’s identified sample, not a universal billionaire average or emissions figure for every jet passenger. Oxfam’s private-jet findings and methodology.

For yachts, Oxfam identified 23 superyachts owned by 18 of the 50 people studied. Those vessels travelled an average of 12,465 nautical miles a year, and Oxfam estimated an average annual carbon footprint of 5,672 tonnes for the identified yachts. Those estimates depend on Oxfam’s methodology and the subset it could identify; they should not be read as a per-passenger or per-trip comparison. Oxfam’s superyacht findings.

For a traveler weighing options, the practical point is that flexibility and privacy can come with an environmental cost. The available figures do not support a precise comparison of the emissions of a particular private flight against a specific commercial itinerary or cruise. They do support keeping the aircraft or vessel, the year, and the study sample attached to any headline emissions number.

What the newer market signals do—and do not—show

A Knight Frank article published April 23, 2026, reports that superyacht sales value rose 70% year over year in 2025 and that sales of yachts over 70 metres rose 60%. The article also says 47% of first-time private-jet flyers were under 45, citing VistaJet data. These are later, attributed market and company-reported figures; they suggest activity and changing participation in those markets, not a census of billionaire travel habits. Knight Frank’s 2026 article.

What can be said with confidence

  • Luxury-traveler surveys include many people who are not billionaires, so their findings should not be relabeled as billionaire behavior.
  • Private aviation, yachts, cruises, luxury lodging, and expert advisors can serve different needs: schedule flexibility, privacy, access, or personalization.
  • Jet and yacht sales totals describe asset markets, not individual travel spending or the number of billionaire travelers.
  • Environmental estimates for jets and yachts are sample- and method-dependent; Oxfam’s figures should stay attributed to its identified 2023 sample.
