About ten Tesla leaseholders in France asked the Paris Commercial Court to end their leases and reimburse legal costs, arguing that Elon Musk’s political activity has changed how others perceive their cars and diminished their enjoyment of them. That is the plaintiffs’ claim—not a court finding that Tesla cars are legally or objectively extreme-right symbols.
Why are French Tesla drivers suing?
The leaseholders’ reported argument is that Musk’s political activity has affected the public meaning of Tesla ownership, causing reputational harm and making the vehicles less enjoyable to own. Their complaint focuses on the gap between why they say they acquired the cars— as innovative, ecological vehicles—and the political associations they believe the brand now carries.
Their law firm, GKA, described Tesla vehicles as powerful political symbols and “veritable extreme-right ‘totems.’” That phrase is the firm’s characterization on behalf of its clients, not a neutral description or an adjudicated conclusion. Euronews reported the case and requested relief; Mediapart reported GKA’s account of the claimed harm.
What did the leaseholders ask the court to do?
Reporting in June 2025 said around ten leaseholders asked the Paris Commercial Court to terminate their lease contracts and reimburse their legal costs. These are the remedies they reportedly sought; the available reporting does not establish that the court granted them or provide a more precise account of the legal theory from a court filing or judgment.

Can Tesla leaseholders cancel their contracts?
This case does not establish a general right for Tesla lessees in France—or elsewhere—to cancel a lease because of a company’s political associations. The reported plaintiffs asked a court to terminate their own contracts, but whether they can do so depends on the outcome of the case and the applicable contract and law. A request for termination is not itself a cancellation or a precedent.
Has the court ruled?
The cited reports do not establish whether the Paris Commercial Court has decided this specific case or whether there has been a later procedural update. There is no basis here to say the leaseholders won, lost, or secured termination of their leases.

How have other Tesla owners reacted?
Owner responses have not been uniform. In a February 2025 report, Le Monde described some owners’ discomfort with the brand’s political associations and others’ willingness to keep driving their cars. It gave the anecdotal example of an owner considering an anti-Musk bumper sticker and reported that French-language stickers were beginning to appear. Those examples illustrate differing individual reactions; they do not show how Tesla owners generally feel.

A June 2025 Mediapart report said EU Tesla sales had “almost halved since the beginning of 2025” and attributed the slump to Musk’s political activity. That is a dated report, not a current sales figure or independently established proof of cause. It should not be treated as evidence that the leaseholders’ legal claims have been accepted.
