The Basics of Rewards Credit Cards: How They Work and What to Compare

Rewards credit cards return value on eligible spending through cash back, points or miles. The right way to compare them is to estimate rewards on purchases you already plan to make, account for fees and interest, and check how—and under what rules—you can redeem the rewards. Points and miles are not guaranteed cash equivalents, and a rewards card can cost more than it returns if you carry a balance.

How do rewards credit cards work?

A rewards credit card attaches a rewards program to a credit account. The issuer sets an earning formula—for example, rewards on eligible purchases—and may also offer a sign-up bonus or referral rewards. The formula, eligible transactions and redemption rules depend on the specific card and program. A point or mile is a program unit, not a promise of a fixed cash value.

Depending on the program, rewards may be redeemable for cash back, transfers to a travel partner, gift cards, merchandise or services, charitable donations, or purchases at checkout. These are possible redemption types across programs, not features available on every card. Check the card’s current terms for its actual options, restrictions and any redemption minimums. The CFPB’s December 2024 circular on credit-card rewards describes these mechanics and cautions that issuers and loyalty programs generally reserve, and often assert, the right to change rewards values or terms, including at redemption.

How should you compare rewards cards?

Compare cards using purchases you already expect to make, not an advertised maximum earn rate or spending you would add just to qualify for rewards. A simple starting point is to estimate the rewards you could actually use, then subtract the annual fee and account for the card’s borrowing costs.

What to compare What to check
Net value Estimate rewards on your normal spending and subtract the annual fee. Count rewards only at a value and through a redemption route you would realistically use.
Interest exposure Review the purchase APR and whether you can pay the required balance in full by the due date. Rewards do not offset finance charges automatically.
Redemption flexibility Check whether the program offers cash back or other redemptions you want, as well as transfer rules, minimums and restrictions.
Program-change risk Read the terms and avoid treating points or miles as fixed-value cash; programs may change their value or rules.
Current terms and eligibility Confirm the issuer’s live offer, disclosures and agreement. A general guide cannot establish your approval odds or the value you personally will receive.

Issuer and program terms matter more than a headline rate. For market context, the CFPB’s December 2025 Consumer Credit Card Market Report says U.S. consumers earned $47.5 billion in credit-card rewards in 2024: $23.9 billion in points, $16.6 billion in cash back and $6.6 billion in miles rewards. These are aggregate market totals, not a forecast of an individual cardholder’s return.

Are cash back or travel points better?

Neither is inherently better. Cash back can be straightforward if you prefer a redemption with a clear cash amount. Travel points or miles may suit someone who will use the program’s travel options, but their practical value depends on available redemptions and current terms. Compare what you can actually redeem—not just the name of the reward or the advertised earn rate.

Amazon eGift Card - Amazon Logo - Classic
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
  • Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.

When weighing two specific cards, use the same assumptions for both: your usual spending, the redemptions you would use, annual fees, APR and grace-period conditions. There is no universal winner without current card terms and your spending and redemption preferences.

Do rewards cards charge interest?

Rewards do not make borrowing free. APR is a yearly measure of the cost of credit, and the purchase APR and other account terms are set out in the card’s disclosures. If you carry a balance and incur interest, those charges can outweigh the value of rewards.

A grace period—the time during which you can repay credit without a finance charge due to a periodic interest rate—is not required for every card. The CFPB’s official interpretation of Regulation Z states: “Section 1026.54 does not require the card issuer to provide a grace period.” An issuer may set conditions for one, including requiring certain balances to be paid in full by a stated date, subject to the regulation. The CFPB’s Regulation Z interpretation on grace-period limitations explains the rule; its card-solicitation disclosure interpretation addresses the required disclosure of grace-period conditions.

Before relying on a grace period, read the current card disclosure and agreement. They specify whether one applies and what you must pay, and when, to qualify.

Do you have to pay your card in full to earn rewards?

Earning and interest are separate issues. A card’s program terms determine which purchases earn rewards, while its APR and grace-period terms determine whether borrowing can cost you interest. The sources cited here do not establish one universal rule that every card requires full payment to earn rewards. Read the specific program terms to learn when rewards are earned, and the card agreement to understand the payment conditions and costs.

Can credit card points lose value?

Yes. The CFPB says issuers and loyalty programs generally reserve, and often assert, the right to change rewards value, including when rewards are redeemed. A point balance therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed amount of cash. Review the program’s current terms and consider whether its redemption choices remain useful to you.

What the market figures can—and cannot—tell you

The CFPB also reports that 20% of U.S. general-purpose card accounts did not offer rewards in 2024, down from 33% in 2015. That describes the market, not whether a rewards card is a good fit for an individual. The CFPB says its Terms of Credit Card Plans survey gathers public data every six months from more than 150 issuers; the agency retired its interactive comparison tool because its source data was not timely enough for consumer comparisons. For a card decision, use issuer disclosures and agreements currently in force rather than relying on broad market figures.

Before applying

  • Estimate rewards from spending you already expect; do not increase purchases solely to earn rewards.
  • Subtract the annual fee and consider the purchase APR and your ability to pay on time.
  • Confirm the redemption choices, program limits and current terms for the card you are considering.
  • Verify the issuer’s current offer and disclosures. General rewards information does not establish a specific offer, approval likelihood or personal return.
