For a varied shopping walk in downtown Charleston, start on King Street: Middle King is strongest for national brands, Lower King for established boutiques and galleries, and Upper King for a more dining- and nightlife-oriented outing. For locally made goods and souvenirs, visit the Charleston City Market; for upscale retail downtown, try The Shops at Charleston Place. Mount Pleasant Towne Centre is an open-air option beyond the historic core.

King Street: choose the section that fits your shopping style

King Street is a long downtown shopping district, not one uniform retail strip. The City of Charleston’s planning overview distinguishes Upper, Middle, and Lower King by their general mix. Treat these descriptions as a guide to the character of each area, not a live list of stores: shops and business hours can change.

Section What to expect Best fit
Middle King The greatest concentration of national brands, according to the City of Charleston’s district overview. Shoppers looking for familiar retailers and a broad retail-focused walk.
Lower King An established area with high-end boutiques and art galleries. Visitors interested in boutique shopping, art, and a more polished retail mix.
Upper King A revitalized area with more restaurants and late-night businesses. A shopping outing that also includes dining or evening plans.

The district overview is in the City of Charleston’s King Street Business Improvement District RFP. If you have a particular shop in mind, confirm its current location and hours before making the trip.

Charleston City Market: souvenirs and locally made goods

The Historic Charleston City Market is a good stop for gifts and locally made wares, including sweetgrass baskets. The market describes these baskets as works of art and sought-after souvenirs. Its official visitor guide reports more than 140 merchants, including 20 locally owned boutiques, spread across three open-air sheds and the Great Hall; those counts are the guide’s figures and may change.

Look for the market’s Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston seal when you want an item made locally. The market explains: “When you see the Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston seal, it means a product is 100% locally made.” The seal is the market’s own designation. See the Historic Charleston City Market guide for details about the market and its wares.

The market’s official pages give different closing times for the Day Market: the explore page lists 5 p.m., while the homepage lists 5:30 p.m. Both list a 9:30 a.m. opening. Check the market’s current hours before visiting rather than relying on either closing time.

The Shops at Charleston Place: upscale shopping downtown

For an upscale retail collection in the heart of downtown, consider The Shops at Charleston Place. It offers a different kind of stop from the broader district walk on King Street or the locally focused City Market. Check the current store directory and hours in the Explore Charleston shopping guide before you go.

Mount Pleasant Towne Centre: an open-air option outside downtown

Mount Pleasant Towne Centre is an open-air shopping center beyond Charleston’s historic core, so plan it as a separate outing rather than part of a downtown walking route. Explore Charleston’s visitor guide describes it as having more than 65 shops and restaurants and a 16-screen theater. Those figures are from the guide and are not a guarantee of the current tenant mix.

Choose it if you want shopping, dining, and a movie in one destination and do not need to stay in the historic district. The official visitor shopping guide is useful for checking current listings.

How to choose where to shop

  • For a flexible downtown walk: King Street lets you choose among national brands, boutiques and galleries, or a restaurant-heavy outing by section.
  • For souvenirs and local craft: Head to the City Market and look for the locally made seal.
  • For upscale retail in the center of downtown: Visit The Shops at Charleston Place.
  • For an open-air shopping-and-entertainment destination outside downtown: Set aside time for Mount Pleasant Towne Centre.
