For a new PS5, start with PlayStation Direct and major authorized retailers; for a used one, prioritize clear testing, a real return window, and written warranty coverage over the lowest sticker price. Compare the exact model, seller, condition, bundle, and total checkout cost—because a disc-drive console, a Digital Edition, and an open-box listing are not equivalent deals.
Where to look for a new PS5
PlayStation Direct
PlayStation Direct is the official place to check first for new consoles and to distinguish Sony-certified refurbished products from ordinary used listings. Check the live stock, exact model, delivery cost, and return terms before deciding; availability and pricing change.
Major authorized retailers
Sony recommends authorized retailers as a way to ensure authenticity, functionality, a return policy, and warranty coverage. Compare listings at retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart, and Target, but verify who is actually selling the console. A retailer’s page may combine its own inventory with third-party marketplace offers, and seller and fulfillment details can affect recourse if something goes wrong. Sony’s US buying guide explains its advice.
Bundles
A bundle is worthwhile only if its included game or accessories are useful to you. Compare the bundle’s checkout total with the console price plus the amount you would genuinely pay for those extras; a claimed discount based on an inflated comparison value is not necessarily a saving.

Where to buy a refurbished or open-box PS5
“Refurbished” is not a single standard. Sony says its certified refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty, while third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by Sony’s warranty. Retailer-refurbished, open-box, and renewed listings may have different testing, repair, return, and warranty arrangements. Read the listing for the specific seller and terms rather than assuming that the label provides a particular level of protection.
- Who inspected or repaired the console, and what tests were performed?
- What is included: controller, cables, stand, disc drive, or other accessories?
- How long is the return window, and who pays return shipping?
- Who handles repairs, and how long does the written warranty last?
- Is the listing sold directly by the retailer or by a marketplace merchant?
When a private-sale or marketplace PS5 makes sense
eBay and local marketplaces may have lower-priced used consoles, but seller reliability, testing evidence, and return rights vary. A private sale is most defensible when you can inspect the exact unit, test it before paying, and accept the reduced protection if a fault appears later. Sony’s warranty guidance says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by its warranty.

Before meeting the seller
- Ask for a video of the exact console powering on, connecting to the internet, and showing its ports, buttons, and disc drive if it has one.
- Ask whether the previous owner has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it.
- Agree in advance that you can test the console and controller before completing the purchase.
- Be cautious if the seller refuses a reasonable test or offers an implausibly low price without a clear explanation.
At inspection
- Confirm the model and whether it has a disc drive; check that the listing’s condition and included accessories match the actual unit.
- Power it on and check for a stable picture over HDMI, normal operation, and signs of overheating or physical damage.
- Test the controller, buttons, ports, internet connection, and PlayStation Network access.
- If it has a disc drive, insert and eject a disc and confirm it is recognized.
- Check the serial number and warranty seals for signs of tampering, and confirm the console is not reported lost or stolen.
How to compare PS5 deals fairly
First decide which console you want: disc-drive and Digital Edition models are not interchangeable offers. Then compare listings for the same model and storage, condition, and bundle contents. Calculate the effective total by adding shipping and tax, and count bundled items only at the value they have to you. Finally, weigh the return window and warranty against the price: a cheaper listing with little recourse may cost more if it fails.
Price snapshots show why there is no dependable permanent cheapest retailer. Best Buy’s US clearance page, accessed October 8, 2026, showed a PS5 Slim listing at $439.99, described as $110 below a $549.99 comparison value, but marked it sold out; the page also displayed refurbished listings and marketplace prices. That is a dated example, not a price to expect. Tom’s Guide reported on October 7, 2026, that GameStop had a pre-owned or refurbished PS5 Pro listing at $1,329 and third-party offers as high as $1,700; it also reported that new PS5 Pro consoles appeared out of stock when checked. Those PS5 Pro listings do not establish a benchmark for a PS5 Slim.

UK demand figures are not a guide to US stock or pricing: TechRadar reported Gumtree’s 2026 figures of a 93% year-over-year increase in UK enquiries for pre-owned consoles and a 129% increase in London demand after a price change took effect April 2, 2026. These figures describe enquiries or demand, not completed sales.
