The Best Crypto Trading Platforms in Canada: A Detailed Evaluation

There is no best crypto platform for every Canadian. Compare provincial authorization, the live all-in cost of your order, trading features, CAD rails, and custody options before choosing.

There is no single best crypto trading platform for every Canadian. Start with the platform’s current authorization and your province, then compare the full cost of the specific order you plan to place, the coins and order types you need, and how you can fund, withdraw, or transfer crypto. The examples below show where the available evidence supports a comparison—and where you should check live terms rather than assume a quoted fee tells the whole story.

What is the best crypto exchange in Canada?

The best fit depends on what you plan to do. A beginner making occasional CAD purchases may prioritize a clear order preview and straightforward funding. An active trader may care more about the pricing on an advanced interface and the available order types. Someone who wants to hold crypto in a wallet they control should check whether transfers are supported for the assets they intend to buy.

As a starting point, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) lists platforms authorized to do business with Canadians, including Coinbase Canada, Crypto.com, Kraken, NDAX Canada, Netcoins, Newton, Shakepay, and Wealthsimple Investments Inc. The CSA page was last updated September 18, 2026. Its entries can have specific terms or geographic limits, so treat the list as a regulatory starting point, not a ranking or a guarantee that every listed service is available to you. Check the CSA’s current authorized-platform list.

To choose among platforms, compare the dimensions that affect your own use:

  • Authorization and province: Confirm the legal entity, registration category, decision terms, and geographic coverage.
  • Total trading cost: Look for the commission or trading fee, spread, small-order charges, funding and withdrawal fees, transfer or network charges, and any foreign-exchange cost.
  • Trading tools and assets: Check the available coins, order types, recurring purchases, swaps, and any staking features you intend to use.
  • Funding and custody: Confirm CAD deposit and withdrawal methods, whether you can transfer crypto to or from an external wallet, and what the platform’s custody or insurance statements actually cover.
  • Support and usability: Consider whether the interface and support model fit occasional purchases or more frequent trading.

How to verify a platform for your province

Authorization details can differ by province and by legal entity. Check official regulator records for the jurisdiction where you live, and read any listed conditions rather than treating a platform name as blanket approval across Canada.

Use the CSA list as a starting point

The CSA’s national page identifies platforms authorized to do business with Canadians, but it notes entries with specific terms or geographic limits. Check the current entry for the platform you are considering and follow any links or conditions attached to it. A listing is not a consumer rating and does not mean crypto holdings are protected from market losses.

Check the provincial record and category

Québec’s Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) register lists platforms including Coinbase, Coinsquare, Fidelity Digital Assets, Crypto.com, NDAX, Kraken, Netcoins, Newton, Shakepay, and Wealthsimple. The AMF says its registration process assesses suitability, including competence, integrity, and solvency, and that registered platforms may be inspected. It also warns that signing a pre-registration undertaking while an application is under review does not mean a platform is registered. Consult the AMF’s cryptoasset-platform register and guidance.

New Brunswick’s Financial and Consumer Services Commission (FCNB) illustrates why it is worth checking the exact category rather than just a firm’s name: its list identifies Coinbase Canada as a restricted dealer with an April 1, 2026 decision; NDAX as an investment dealer with a December 19, 2024 decision; Kraken as a restricted dealer with an April 1, 2025 decision; and Wealthsimple Investments Inc. as an investment dealer with a December 22, 2025 decision. Those categories are not interchangeable. The FCNB says registered platforms must meet operational, internal-control, and client-disclosure requirements. Check the FCNB’s registered crypto asset trading platforms.

How to compare crypto trading costs

A displayed trading fee is only one part of what an order may cost. Some platforms show a separate commission; others may incorporate some cost in the spread between the market price and the price at which you trade. The simple buy screen and an advanced trading interface can also have different pricing. Before confirming, inspect the live order preview and check any funding, cash-out, transfer, or currency-conversion charges that apply to your route.

The figures below are examples with different evidence and conditions, not a like-for-like ranking. Broker Guide Canada’s comparison was last reviewed September 16, 2026; it reports NDAX’s flat trade fee as 0.20%, last confirmed by that publisher on August 28, 2026. The same comparison says its other seven platform checks were last verified in July 2026 and cautions that spreads, promotions, and APYs change. Wealthsimple’s fee information comes from its own page. Confirm current official terms and the quote for your particular order before trading.

Platform Published cost information What to check before submitting an order
NDAX Broker Guide Canada reports a flat 0.20% trade fee, last confirmed by the publisher on August 28, 2026. This is a third-party comparison figure, not a live order quote. See Broker Guide Canada’s comparison. Confirm the current fee in NDAX’s official terms and review the order preview, including any funding, cash-out, or transfer charges that apply.
Wealthsimple Wealthsimple states a 0.5% fee plus a variable spread for crypto trades; the spread is shown before submission. Its page says limit orders are spread-free, orders under $100 have a $1 small-order surcharge, and a 1.5% foreign-exchange fee applies to USD crypto trading under the described account conditions. Check Wealthsimple’s crypto fees and terms. Check the live order preview, your account and order size, and whether the trade involves USD. Confirm the current conditions for any order type you plan to use.

These examples do not establish which platform will be cheaper for your order: the NDAX figure is a third-party-reported flat fee, while Wealthsimple describes a fee and, for applicable trades, a variable spread. Compare the actual quote for the same asset and order size, and include any other charges relevant to your deposit, withdrawal, or transfer path.

Which platform features matter for your use case?

If you are new to crypto

Prioritize a comprehensible order preview, straightforward CAD funding, and a fee presentation you can verify before buying. Do not assume a simple buy screen has the same cost as an advanced interface. If the quoted price includes a spread, compare the price you will actually pay with the market price as well as checking any stated commission.

If you trade actively

Check which order types are available and whether the platform has an interface suited to your trading style. Compare the cost on that interface—not just the price shown on an instant-buy screen—and verify which assets and order types are available to your account. A feature’s existence does not establish its eligibility or terms for every customer.

If you want recurring purchases, swaps, or staking

Wealthsimple describes scheduled purchases, limit orders, swaps, and staking among its crypto features. Availability and terms can depend on eligibility and may change; confirm the current rules and supported assets in the platform’s own information before relying on a feature. Review Wealthsimple’s current crypto features.

If you want to move crypto to a wallet you control

Check whether the platform permits deposits and withdrawals for the specific asset and network you intend to use, and review any limits, waiting periods, and fees. A hardware wallet is a separate custody tool for holding crypto outside a trading platform; it is not an exchange and does not eliminate the risk that the crypto itself may lose value. Broker Guide Canada discusses hardware wallets as a self-custody option, but does not establish a particular model or product-specific security claim. Read the comparison’s self-custody discussion.

What registration does—and does not—mean

Regulatory registration is important to verify, but it does not remove the risks of buying crypto. The AMF states, “Transactions involving crypto assets are not covered by deposit protection.” It also says, “A platform’s registration as a dealer does not eliminate the risks and volatility related to cryptoassets.” These are direct crypto-investment risks, separate from whether a platform appears in a regulator’s records. Read the AMF’s consumer guidance.

Do not treat a platform’s regulatory status as a promise that your crypto is insured or that you cannot lose money. Read the terms for any specific custody or insurance statement to understand what it covers and excludes; the regulator listings and fee information above do not establish deposit protection for direct crypto holdings.

A practical checklist before you open an account

  1. Confirm the legal entity and provincial status. Search the current CSA list and the regulator record for your province; read any terms, geographic limits, or category shown.
  2. Choose an asset and order size to compare. The cost of a particular trade depends on what you buy, how much you buy, and the order method.
  3. Compare the live price and all stated fees. Review the order preview for the fee and any spread, then check applicable CAD funding, withdrawal, network, transfer, and FX charges.
  4. Verify the features you need. Confirm asset availability, order types, recurring buys, external-wallet transfers, and any staking or swap terms for your account.
  5. Decide where you intend to hold the crypto. If you plan to use an external wallet, verify the platform supports the intended asset and network and understand the transfer steps and costs.
  6. Review the platform’s current terms before funding. Authorization, fees, spreads, and feature eligibility can change; use regulator and platform pages for the latest details.
