The Best Budget Spreadsheets: Choose the Right Fit for Your Workflow

Compare Google Sheets and Excel templates, Aspire, Vertex42, and Tiller by budgeting method, transaction entry, platform, and upkeep.

The best budget spreadsheet depends on how you want to manage money: use Google Sheets or Excel’s built-in templates for a quick monthly overview, Aspire for a more structured zero-based budget, Vertex42 for an editable traditional workbook, or Tiller if you want transactions imported into a spreadsheet. These options do different jobs; a monthly income-and-expense snapshot is not the same as an ongoing budget that tracks purchases and category balances.

Compare the best budget spreadsheets by workflow

Option Best fit Budgeting approach Transaction workflow Platform and cost Maintenance considerations
Google Sheets built-in budget templates A simple monthly overview High-level income versus expenses No transaction tracking or category rollovers, according to Aspire’s 2026 comparison Google Sheets template; price not stated by Google’s template help page Low setup effort; limited for monitoring category balances over time
Microsoft Excel Personal budget template Monthly income, expenses, and projected-versus-actual comparison Simple monthly plan and expense tracking Enter income and costs in the template Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac; template price not stated by Microsoft Support Calculates the difference between entered income and expenses
Aspire Budgeting A maintained, zero-based budget in Google Sheets Zero-based, envelope-style budgeting Manual transaction entry or CSV import in the core template; automatic bank syncing is not part of that workflow Google Sheets; Aspire describes the template as free Includes category balances, transfers, multiple accounts, and reports; feature details are provider claims
Vertex42 Personal Budget An editable, conventional workbook for monthly or yearly planning Traditional income-and-expense planning Enter information in the workbook; automatic imports are not stated on the template page Excel and Google Sheets versions; price not stated on the template page Categories are editable. Vertex42 warns that changing formulas can cause errors and recommends checking formulas after customization. Its page was updated August 18, 2021.
Tiller Spreadsheet budgeting with imported transactions Budgeting in Google Sheets or Excel using transaction data Tiller’s guide describes transaction imports Google Sheets or Excel; paid service, with current price and terms not established by the May 4, 2026 guide Automation can reduce manual transaction entry; check current features and subscription terms

These descriptions are based on provider pages and publisher comparisons, not hands-on testing. Template availability, compatibility, and paid-service terms can change.

Choose a spreadsheet based on what you need to track

For a quick monthly snapshot: Google Sheets or Excel

Google Sheets’ Template Gallery includes Google-created budget templates. Google explains how to select a template and open a copy in its Template Gallery help page. Aspire’s 2026 comparison characterizes the built-in budget options as a high-level income-versus-expense view, rather than a system for tracking purchases or rolling unused category balances forward. Choose this route if you want a straightforward plan and do not need each transaction represented in the sheet.

Microsoft describes its Personal budget template as a way to track monthly income and expenses. Its support page says users enter income and costs, can compare projected and actual costs, and have the difference calculated automatically. Microsoft’s wording is: “This Excel template can help you track your monthly budget by income and expenses.” The page applies to Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac. See Microsoft’s Personal budget template guidance.

For zero-based budgeting in Google Sheets: Aspire

Aspire is the clearest fit among these options if you want to assign income across categories and keep a running view of what remains in each one. Aspire describes its template as zero-based and envelope-style, with transaction entry, category balances, category transfers, multiple accounts, and reports. Because Aspire provides the product, those feature descriptions are provider claims, not independent verification.

The core Aspire workflow relies on manual transaction entry or CSV import rather than automatic bank syncing. That distinction matters: you can use category balances to guide spending, but the sheet will only reflect transactions that you add or import. See Aspire’s budgeting spreadsheet information.

The template page was updated August 18, 2021, so inspect the file and confirm compatibility with your spreadsheet software before relying on it.

Customization has a trade-off: Vertex42 warns that formula edits can introduce errors and advises users to double-check formulas after making changes. See Vertex42’s Personal Budget template page.

For imported transactions: Tiller

Tiller is the paid option in this group for people who want transactions imported into Google Sheets or Excel rather than relying on manual entry. Its May 4, 2026 guide describes spreadsheet transaction imports and contrasts that automation with the manual entry used by free templates. The guide does not establish current pricing or terms, so check Tiller’s spreadsheet guide and its current offer before subscribing.

What to check before choosing

  • Decide whether you need a snapshot or a running budget. A monthly income-and-expense plan helps compare totals; a transaction-based system is better suited to monitoring purchases and category balances as the month progresses.
  • Check how transactions get into the sheet. Aspire’s core template uses manual entry or CSV import; Tiller’s service is the spreadsheet-import option here. Do not assume a template connects to a bank just because it runs in a spreadsheet.
  • Consider how you handle multiple accounts and category changes. Aspire says its template supports multiple accounts and category transfers. A simpler monthly template may be enough if you only need household totals.
  • Review platform and compatibility. Microsoft’s template guidance covers Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac. Vertex42 offers both Excel and Google Sheets files, but its page’s update date is 2021.
  • Account for ongoing upkeep. Manual entry takes regular attention; imports may save that step but involve a paid service. If you alter a workbook’s formulas, verify that totals and calculations still work.
  • Verify current availability and terms. Providers can change templates, features, and prices. A reviewed comparison is not a guarantee that an offer remains unchanged.

Do budget spreadsheets improve financial outcomes?

A spreadsheet can make income, expenses, and category limits visible, but the sources reviewed do not establish an independent statistic showing that a particular template improves savings, reduces debt, or produces better financial health. FinancialAha’s 2026 comparison assessed 10 templates across six criteria and gave its Financial Planning and Monthly Budget templates 27/30 each; the publisher identifies its scoring as subjective. Those ratings are not evidence of financial outcomes. See FinancialAha’s comparison.
