Bitcoin Wallet Update Scam: What the 2020 $22 Million Headline Means

The 2020 headline described a reported Electrum fake-update campaign, not current audited losses. Here’s how to verify downloads and protect your wallet seed.

The “more than $22 million” figure refers to a historical October 2020 media report about a fake Electrum update scam—not a current loss total or an audited law-enforcement statistic. The reported tactic was to show Electrum users a deceptive update prompt, lead them to malicious software and induce a bitcoin transfer. For a safe update today, download Electrum only from its official site, verify the GPG signature and back up your wallet seed first.

What the $22 million headline actually describes

ZDNet published the headline in October 2020. Its estimate was tied to bitcoin accounts reportedly holding proceeds from attacks. Contemporary coverage cited approximately 1,980 BTC in identified accounts and attributed 1,400 BTC to a single reported victim loss. Those are figures reported at the time, not current losses, independently audited totals or official law-enforcement statistics. ZDNet’s original page was not accessible for direct review, so the precise amounts should be understood as historical media reporting, not verified accounting. ZDNet’s 2020 report is the source of the headline and estimate.

How the fake Electrum update scam was reported to work

Contemporaneous accounts described users of older Electrum wallet versions seeing an unexpected security-update popup. The prompt directed them to download or install software that was not a legitimate Electrum update. Some accounts said users were then asked for a one-time code that could authorize a transfer. The intended result was a transfer from the victim’s wallet to an attacker-controlled address.

The important distinction is that an update-looking prompt—even one shown while a familiar wallet is open—does not prove that the download is authentic. These reports concern a specific campaign; they do not mean that every Electrum update or Electrum server is malicious. Contemporaneous coverage of the reported attacks provides additional context.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

How to update Electrum safely

  1. Start from Electrum’s official site. Type electrum.org into your browser rather than following an update popup, unsolicited message or search ad. The project says: “Do not download Electrum from a source other than electrum.org. Verify GPG signatures.” Use the official download page to check the current release; version numbers change, and the page showed 4.8.2 on October 8, 2026.
  2. Verify the GPG signature. Follow Electrum’s instructions for checking the signature on the downloaded file before installing it. A valid signature checks that the file was signed by the expected key and helps protect against a substituted download, including in the event that a site or file distribution is compromised. A download’s appearance or filename alone is not verification. Electrum’s download page provides the project’s verification guidance.
  3. Back up the seed before upgrading. Write the recovery seed on paper and keep it private and offline. Electrum says a wallet can be restored from its seed; if both the password and seed are lost, the funds cannot be recovered. If you forget the password but still have the seed, you can restore the wallet from it. Electrum’s FAQ explains recovery and passwords.
  4. Stop if a prompt asks for your seed or a transfer code. Do not enter a recovery phrase into an unexpected update dialog or provide it to someone offering unsolicited support. If you are unsure whether a prompt is legitimate, close it and check the official site independently before taking action.

Would a hardware wallet or cold storage help?

Electrum supports hardware wallets and describes cold storage as an option. A hardware wallet can keep signing keys on an offline device rather than on an internet-connected computer, changing where a key is exposed. But it does not authenticate a fake software download, protect a seed phrase that you disclose, or guarantee safety if you approve a malicious transaction. It is an optional security measure for people holding meaningful funds, not a substitute for verifying software and carefully reviewing what they sign. Electrum’s official site describes its supported hardware-wallet and cold-storage options.

Where to check before your next update

Go directly to Electrum’s official release and download page for the current version and signature instructions. Do not rely on the 2020 headline as a measure of present-day losses: it describes a reported historical campaign, while safe updating depends on checking each download against current official guidance.
