Lexus has the strongest recurring reliability signal in the available U.S. studies, with model-level recognition for the GX, NX and RX. The Acura RDX is another evidence-backed used-SUV candidate. These findings make a useful shortlist, not a definitive ranking of every luxury SUV or model year from the past decade: the studies cover different owner cohorts and use different measures.
Which luxury SUVs have the strongest reliability evidence?
For a buyer comparing used luxury SUVs, start with the Lexus GX, NX and RX, then consider the Acura RDX. J.D. Power recognized the GX in its 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study and the NX and RX in its 2024 study. CARFAX separately identifies the RDX as among the more reliable luxury SUVs since the end of its second generation in 2018. The evidence does not establish that one of these models is always the most reliable, or that every year and configuration performs alike.
| Candidate | What the evidence says | Scope of the finding |
|---|---|---|
| Lexus GX | Listed among Toyota Motor Corporation’s model-level award recipients in the 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. J.D. Power, 2025 study | Study responses came from 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles, surveyed after three years. This is a model-level award mention, not a score series for all GX years. |
| Lexus NX | Listed among Toyota Motor Corporation’s model-level award recipients in the 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. J.D. Power, 2024 study | Study responses came from 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles, surveyed after three years. |
| Lexus RX | Also listed among Toyota Motor Corporation’s model-level award recipients in the 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. J.D. Power, 2024 study | Study responses came from 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles, surveyed after three years. |
| Acura RDX | CARFAX describes it as among the more reliable luxury SUVs since the end of its second generation in 2018. CARFAX, Most Reliable Luxury SUVs in 2026 | CARFAX’s ranking focuses on model years 2019–2023 and unexpected-repair likelihood over five years; it does not provide an annual score series in the cited finding. |
Why reliability rankings do not produce one definitive winner
“Reliable” can refer to different outcomes over different ownership periods. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) measures reported problems per 100 vehicles after three years. CARFAX’s used-SUV ranking describes the likelihood of unexpected repairs over five years. These methods and time horizons are not interchangeable, so their results should not be combined into a single score.
The J.D. Power findings are U.S. studies of original owners of specified model years. They provide evidence about those cohorts, not direct evaluations of every used vehicle on the market or results that automatically apply outside the United States.

Brand results are context, not a model-by-model guarantee
J.D. Power named Lexus the highest luxury brand in its 2021 VDS, which surveyed owners of 2018 model-year vehicles after three years; the study’s industry average was 121 problems per 100 vehicles. But rankings change with the cohort: in the 2022 study of 2019 model-year vehicles, Genesis ranked highest in the premium segment, followed by Lexus and Porsche. A brand-level result can help identify candidates, but it does not establish that every SUV from that brand is equally dependable.
More recent findings reinforce Lexus’s presence without erasing those limits. J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS used responses from 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years; its release says Lexus had the top overall model and eight model-level awards. Those broad results do not mean that every Lexus SUV received an award or will have the same ownership experience. J.D. Power, 2026 study

What the studies cover across the past decade
The decade-wide wording is broader than the available comparable model evidence. The cited J.D. Power studies report findings for particular model-year cohorts, while CARFAX’s current used-SUV ranking focuses on 2019–2023 model years. CARFAX says its repair data go back to 2010, but that does not turn its current ranking into a year-by-year comparison of every luxury SUV sold during the decade.

How to use reliability evidence when buying a used luxury SUV
A study result is a starting point, not a substitute for checking the specific vehicle. Model year, generation, powertrain and condition matter: a finding for one cohort should not be projected across a nameplate’s whole history without supporting data.

- Match the evidence to the vehicle. Check the SUV’s exact model year and generation against the cited finding. The GX award reference concerns the 2025 study’s cohort; the NX and RX references concern the 2024 study’s cohort.
- Keep unlike measures separate. Treat J.D. Power’s three-year reported-problem findings and CARFAX’s five-year unexpected-repair likelihood as different evidence, not competing scores on one scale.
- Review the individual vehicle’s history. Look for maintenance records and have the vehicle’s condition assessed. CARFAX identifies established maintenance history as relevant context for evaluating used vehicles; a model’s reputation cannot reveal how a particular example was maintained.
- Check the configuration, not just the badge. Compare the exact year, trim and powertrain you intend to buy. The available findings do not establish a complete year-by-year scorecard for all configurations.
What Consumer Reports’ method adds
Consumer Reports says its predicted reliability ratings draw on annual member surveys about problems owners have experienced. It requires data for at least two models and recent model years to rank a brand. That is another survey-based approach, distinct from both J.D. Power’s three-year VDS and CARFAX’s five-year repair-likelihood ranking; it should be read according to its own methodology. Consumer Reports, Who Makes the Most Reliable New Cars?
