NCR’s Growth, Atlanta Headquarters and Impact on the City’s Fintech Scene

NCR’s Midtown headquarters made it a visible Atlanta technology anchor, but announced job projections are not verified outcomes and do not prove the company caused the city’s fintech growth.

NCR’s move to Midtown Atlanta established a prominent corporate presence near Georgia Tech and Technology Square, but the available evidence does not show how many projected jobs were ultimately realized or prove that NCR caused Atlanta’s broader fintech growth. The company evolved from its 1884 incorporation into an enterprise technology business, then split into NCR Voyix and NCR Atleos in 2023; Voyix later sold its Digital Banking segment in 2024.

How did NCR grow?

NCR Corporation says it was incorporated in 1884. In its 2022 annual filing, it described itself as a software- and services-led enterprise technology company serving retail, restaurant and banking customers. Its portfolio included cloud software, application programming interfaces (APIs), services, payments, ATMs, self-checkout, point-of-sale terminals and other self-service technologies. This history shows a shift toward a broad technology and services portfolio; the cited materials do not establish a comparable long-term revenue or market-share growth trend. NCR’s 2022 Form 10-K

Why did NCR move its headquarters to Atlanta?

The City of Atlanta announced NCR’s planned global headquarters in Midtown on January 14, 2015. The city highlighted the site’s proximity to Technology Square and Georgia Tech, tying the project to Atlanta’s technology district. At the time, Mayor Kasim Reed said the headquarters was expected to bring 3,600 jobs to the city. That was a projection in the announcement, not a verified final job count. NCR later presented the campus as a long-term commitment to the city and state. In 2016, then-president, CEO and chairman Bill Nuti described the project as a commitment to Atlanta, Georgia, employees and customers. That statement reflects the company’s rationale and rhetoric at the time; it does not measure the project’s eventual economic effects. NCR’s 2016 expansion announcement

What did NCR announce for the Midtown campus?

The announcements describe successive stages of the project, with figures that should not be treated as interchangeable. The city’s 2015 projection, NCR’s 2016 expansion plans and the company’s 2018 opening announcement use different descriptions of jobs, professionals and campus capacity; the sources do not reconcile those categories.

Announcement What it said How to read the figure
City of Atlanta, January 2015 3,600 jobs projected for the city A forecast, not a verified count of jobs created or retained. City announcement
NCR, 2016 More than 1,800 skilled professionals over five years; $145 million planned investment in a second tower Announced hiring and investment plans; the source does not establish their final realized totals. NCR announcement
NCR, January 2018 Two-tower campus of roughly 750,000 square feet, expected to house approximately 5,000 skilled professionals Describes the opened campus and expected workforce, not 5,000 new jobs attributable to the relocation. NCR opening announcement

Because the announcements use distinct measures and expectations, they cannot be added together to produce a defensible total of jobs NCR brought to Atlanta. The reviewed sources do not verify how many projected positions were ultimately filled, how many workers were already in the region, or how the campus’s expected headcount compared with the city’s jobs projection.

What is NCR today?

The name NCR now refers to a changed corporate structure rather than one unchanged business. On October 16, 2023, NCR completed the spin-off of its ATM-focused business—including self-service banking, payments and network, and telecommunications and technology businesses—into a separate company, NCR Atleos. NCR Voyix remained a separate company focused on unified commerce for shopping and dining. Its 2024 filing records the sale of its Digital Banking segment on September 30, 2024, and its 2025 filing describes Voyix as Atlanta-headquartered, operating across nearly 30 countries with approximately 13,500 employees as of that filing. That employee figure is company-wide, not an Atlanta headcount. NCR’s 2024 filing; NCR Voyix’s 2025 Form 10-K

What impact did NCR have on Atlanta fintech?

The clearest supported impact is NCR’s role as a large corporate anchor in Midtown and a participant in the region’s technology and fintech community. The headquarters’ location near Georgia Tech connected it geographically to a major technology campus, while the Technology Association of Georgia’s 2023 fintech report discusses NCR’s local university relationships and internship activity. These are concrete signs of engagement, but they do not quantify NCR’s independent contribution to fintech employment, investment, company formation or output. Technology Association of Georgia’s 2023 fintech report

The TAG report also states that 70% of global transactions pass through companies headquartered in metro Atlanta. The underlying dataset and method for that figure are not established in the cited material, so it should be read as TAG’s reported statistic rather than an independently verified measure of NCR’s influence.

Proximity, hiring plans and university activity make NCR relevant to Atlanta’s fintech story, but they do not establish causation. The cited sources include no controlled impact study, NCR-specific share of local fintech employment or output, or audited final tally of jobs attributable to the headquarters move.
