Rowan Atkinson’s Net Worth: What’s Known About His Mr. Bean Earnings and Spending

Rowan Atkinson’s net worth is often estimated at $150 million, but that figure comes from a third-party celebrity-wealth profile—not an audited statement or a disclosure by Atkinson. The exact sources and distribution of his income are not publicly established. What can be documented is the long-running reach of Mr. Bean, Atkinson’s wider career, and his own comments about money and cars.

Is Rowan Atkinson’s net worth really $150 million?

Wealthy Gorilla lists Rowan Atkinson’s net worth as an estimated $150 million. The page does not provide a clearly stated publication date, and the figure is not confirmed by Atkinson or supported by a public financial statement. Treat it as an estimate, not a verified account of his assets or cash.

There is no reliable public breakdown showing how much Atkinson has earned from acting, Mr. Bean rights, films, animation, merchandise, investments, property, or other sources. It would be misleading to assign specific sums to any of those categories or present the $150 million estimate as a current balance sheet.

How did Rowan Atkinson make his money?

A career that began before Mr. Bean

Atkinson’s career predates the Mr. Bean television series. The official Mr. Bean creators page describes him as a founding member of the team behind Not the Nine O’Clock News and notes his stage and television work. It says the Mr. Bean character first emerged from material in his stage shows in the 1980s. These career milestones establish a broader professional background, but do not reveal what he was paid.

The commercial reach of Mr. Bean

Banijay Entertainment reported in August 2025 that Mr. Bean premiered on ITV on January 1, 1990, and drew 13.45 million viewers. The company also said the brand remained in distribution across more than 200 territories and that its main YouTube channel had surpassed 35 million subscribers. These dated figures show the franchise’s reach; they do not disclose Atkinson’s royalty terms, licensing income, or personal receipts.

The original live-action series is one part of a broader franchise. Banijay’s 2025 account describes two feature films and later animation as well as the original series. It reported that all 14 original live-action episodes had been released on video as The Whole Bean; a 2015 Los Angeles Times report also discussed that release. Episode count and audience figures are franchise facts, not a basis for calculating Atkinson’s earnings.

Atkinson described the character’s evolution in Banijay’s August 2025 announcement: “You have to evolve and keep the changes coming to maintain relevancy. I quite like the fact we’ve taken Mr. Bean from the theatre, where he started in the 1970’s, to live-action, films, animation and now YouTube!” The quote captures the franchise’s movement across formats, but provides no financial terms.

What Atkinson has said about money and motivation

In an interview with The Arts Desk, Atkinson acknowledged that some friends might be right that earnings and the prospect of buying an Aston Martin were among his reasons for pursuing comedy. He said he did not believe his work was purely commercial. He also recalled that his first car of great value was an Aston Martin V8 bought in 1981. This is a personal anecdote about motivation and a purchase—not evidence of his total income or wealth.

What is known about Rowan Atkinson’s cars and spending?

Atkinson’s enthusiasm for cars is supported by his interviews. In a 2022 profile, British GQ quoted him saying, “Cars are my great obsession,” and, “I find them a very valuable escape.” The profile discusses vehicles in the context of his interests and work, but that does not establish a complete, current inventory or a verified valuation of his collection.

The 1981 Aston Martin V8 is a specific purchase Atkinson recalled to The Arts Desk. Beyond that anecdote and the cars identified in profile coverage, the available information does not support a comprehensive account of what he owns, what he has sold, or how much he spends. A reported vehicle or auction price should not be treated as a line in a personal net-worth ledger without direct financial evidence.

What the public evidence can—and cannot—show

Publicly documented Not established by these sources
Atkinson’s stage and television work before Mr. Bean, and the character’s origins in his stage shows, according to the official creators page. His total career earnings or the amount he was paid for particular roles.
Banijay’s 2025 reports on Mr. Bean’s premiere audience, distribution reach, YouTube subscribers, and franchise formats. Atkinson’s royalty rates, residuals, licensing share, or personal income from those audience and distribution figures.
Atkinson’s comments about a possible financial motive for comedy and his interest in cars. A complete asset list, verified current car collection value, spending total, or audited net worth.
A third-party estimate of $150 million from Wealthy Gorilla. Independent confirmation that $150 million is his actual or current net worth.

The soundest conclusion is limited: Mr. Bean has substantial, documented international and online reach, while Atkinson’s personal finances remain private. The scale of a successful franchise cannot, by itself, establish how much its co-creator earned from it.
