Lindt & Sprüngli traces its roots to a Zurich confectionery shop opened by David Sprüngli in 1845. Its later growth came from more than one breakthrough: the Sprüngli family’s chocolate business joined Rodolphe Lindt’s conching innovation in 1899, then the company built recognizable products, international distribution, acquired brands and owned retail. The group reported CHF 5.92 billion in sales in 2025, a measure of its scale rather than independent proof of a global ranking.
Who founded Lindt chocolate?
The company’s origin story begins in 1845, when confectioner David Sprüngli opened a shop in Zurich’s old town. He and his son Rudolf began producing chocolate there. Lindt & Sprüngli describes their product as the first solid chocolate bar in the German-speaking part of Switzerland; that “first” claim comes from the company’s own history. Lindt & Sprüngli’s company history
As demand outgrew the shop’s capacity, the family opened a factory in Schleifetobel, Horgen, in 1847. David Sprüngli opened another confectionery shop at Zurich’s Paradeplatz in 1859, creating a retail strand alongside production.
The confectionery shops split from chocolate production
In 1892, a succession arrangement divided the family business. Johann Rudolf Sprüngli inherited chocolate production, while David Robert Sprüngli received the confectionery shops. The shops became a separate business; Confiserie Sprüngli is not part of the Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate group.

What did Rodolphe Lindt invent?
In 1879, Berne chocolate maker Rodolphe Lindt developed conching, a process that slowly stirs and aerates chocolate mass. Lindt & Sprüngli says this helps produce a smoother texture and influences chocolate’s flavor and flow. The company’s history also recounts that Lindt may have left a machine running over a weekend, but presents that detail as an uncertain anecdote—not an established account of how the process was invented. Conching became central to Lindt’s chocolate-making identity, but it is only one part of the company’s subsequent growth. The available company history does not establish that the technique alone made Lindt popular worldwide.

When did Lindt and Sprüngli join?
In 1899, Johann Rudolf Sprüngli acquired Rodolphe Lindt’s business, including the Lindt brand and recipe. That combination brought together Sprüngli’s production and retail experience with Lindt’s chocolate-making innovation, forming the company’s modern foundation. It followed the 1892 split that had placed the Sprüngli confectionery shops outside the chocolate business. Lindt & Sprüngli’s company history
How did Lindt & Sprüngli grow beyond Switzerland?
Distributors, subsidiaries and a new corporate identity
During the 1920s, the company says it established distributors in Germany and the United States. It opened its first subsidiary, in Berlin, in 1928, and adopted the name “Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Sprüngli AG” in 1930. Later international growth relied on both licensing partners and wholly owned subsidiaries, with new entities in Spain, Germany, France, the United States and Hong Kong. The company was listed on the Swiss stock exchange in 1986. Lindt & Sprüngli’s company history

Products that became brand anchors
Several products gave consumers recognizable ways into the brand. Lindt dates the Lindor bar to 1949 and the Gold Bunny to 1952. Its history page gives conflicting dates for the Lindor truffle: one section says 1967, while another says it launched in 1969 as a Christmas ornament. Because the company’s account is inconsistent, it is safer not to assign the truffle a single launch year.
Lindor, Excellence and Gold Bunny remain among the products the company identifies as important or iconic. They illustrate product development as a distinct growth mechanism, alongside distribution and acquisitions—not as proof that any one product caused the group’s later scale. Acquisitions broadened the portfolio
Lindt & Sprüngli acquired Italian chocolatier Caffarel and U.S. chocolate maker Ghirardelli in 1998. In 2014, it acquired Russell Stover, which includes the Whitman’s and Pangburn’s brands. These additions expanded the group’s brand portfolio; the company history does not quantify how much each acquisition contributed to sales or growth. Lindt & Sprüngli’s company history
Owned retail became another growth channel
The company launched its Farming Program in 2008 as its responsible cocoa-sourcing standard. In 2009, it established a Global Retail division, which it describes as a growth driver. The group’s 2025 annual-report extract says owned-store and e-shop sales grew organically by 20.8% that year; this is the company’s reported growth figure for those channels, not a measure of total group sales growth. How large is Lindt & Sprüngli today?
Lindt & Sprüngli reported CHF 5.92 billion in sales in 2025. Its company overview reports approximately 15,500 employees, 12 production sites, 41 subsidiaries and branch offices, and a presence in 120 countries. These are company-reported measures of scale; the reviewed sources do not establish an independent ranking for the claim that Lindt is “one of the biggest” luxury chocolate makers worldwide. Lindt & Sprüngli company overview
Store figures depend on reporting context: the overview describes around 650 stores, while the 2025 annual-report extract counts 621 owned stores at year end. The figures should not be treated as two exact counts for the same date. The annual-report extract also reports CHF 330.5 million in investment in 2025, up 5.2%, primarily for infrastructure and retail expansion, and describes capacity-building for a global wafer launch planned for 2027. What explains the company’s growth?
Lindt & Sprüngli’s history points to several connected mechanisms rather than a single cause: an early family chocolate business, Lindt’s conching process, the 1899 combination, products that built brand recognition, wider distribution, acquisitions and investment in owned retail. The sources document those milestones but do not assign a precise share of growth to any one factor. The 2025 sales figure shows the group’s reported scale; it does not by itself verify a comparative world ranking.
