Those snapshots explain the headline’s claim, but they do not prove who objectively won the debate or establish that the debate alone caused the moves.
What changed after the September 10, 2024 debate?
In its September 11, 2024 article, Gizmodo reported three contemporaneous market signals:
- Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) shares fell more than 14% in overnight trading following the debate and continued to fall after the market opened. This is Gizmodo’s report of the move, not an independently verified closing-price calculation.
- On Polymarket, Gizmodo reported Trump at 52% and Harris at 46% in the hour before the debate. At the time of publication, it reported Harris at 50% and Trump at 49%.
- Gizmodo also reported PredictIt prices of 55¢ for Harris and 46¢ for Trump during its publication window.
These are historical figures reported by Gizmodo, not current prices or independently audited exchange records.
Why compare DJT shares with election-market prices?
| Signal | What it measures | What the reported movement suggests |
|---|---|---|
| DJT common stock | The market price of shares in Trump Media & Technology Group | Gizmodo reported a negative immediate reaction for Trump-related shares after the debate. |
| Polymarket election contracts | Traders’ priced probabilities for an election outcome | The reported snapshot shifted from a Trump lead before the debate to a slight Harris lead at publication. |
| PredictIt election contracts | Contract prices associated with an election outcome | Gizmodo reported a higher price for Harris than Trump in its publication window. |
These signals are not interchangeable. A company’s share price reflects expectations about that business and trading in its stock; election-market prices reflect traders’ positions on a political outcome. Neither directly measures viewers’ assessment of debate performance.

Did Trump lose the debate according to the markets?
The narrow, supportable answer is that Gizmodo’s reported snapshots were unfavorable to Trump: DJT shares fell, and the quoted election-market prices moved toward Harris. Calling that a market verdict is a characterization of those movements, not proof of an objective debate winner. Prices can react to news, liquidity, and trader positioning, and the snapshots do not isolate the debate as the cause of every change.
The cited article does not establish what a representative sample of debate viewers thought. Answering that question would require a documented survey or another measure designed to capture audience judgments, rather than stock or contract prices.

Matthew Gault’s September 11, 2024 Gizmodo headline, “The Market Has Spoken: Trump Lost the Debate,” uses the immediate market reaction as evidence for its framing. Read it as a report about the direction of selected prices after the debate—not as a formal poll, a verified election forecast, or proof that markets reached a definitive judgment about debate quality.
