Nike reported $7.034 billion in Jordan Brand product sales for fiscal 2026, making it a multibillion-dollar brand by annual sales—not a separately reported public company, and not a measure of profit.
How did Air Jordan become so popular?
The story began with a shoe built around Michael Jordan, but its appeal was not limited to basketball players. TIME’s 2023 account identifies Peter Moore as the designer of the Air Jordan 1 and says the shoe’s design and marketing helped it reach consumers beyond the sport. The red, black, and white color scheme and the Air Jordan name gave the model a recognizable identity; the Wings logo became another distinctive mark.
TIME recounts that Jordan’s agent, David Falk, suggested the “Air Jordan” name. Moore described drawing the Wings logo this way: “She gave me the wings, and I sat down and started drawing the wings. I put a basketball in the middle of them.” Those details come from TIME’s historical account, rather than a Nike archival record established here.
Why were the original Air Jordans banned?
The “banned” story became part of the Air Jordan 1’s marketing narrative. TIME describes the campaign and the red-and-black shoe in that context. The tale helped make the sneaker’s identity legible beyond the court, but it should not be treated as proof that a single campaign caused the brand’s success. Design, a high-profile athlete, and appeal to people who did not play basketball all form part of the historical account; the available evidence does not quantify the effect of each factor.

The expansion helps explain why “Air Jordan” and “Jordan Brand” are not interchangeable measures of one shoe’s performance: Nike’s reported Jordan Brand sales cover a broader product business. The company’s disclosures establish the categories, but do not provide a standalone public-company account for Jordan Brand.

Nike includes Jordan Brand sales and operating results within the respective NIKE Brand geographic operating segments. Its results release presents Jordan Brand product sales in the NIKE Brand revenue detail; the Form 10-K explains the segment placement. That means the brand’s disclosed product-sales figures are useful for understanding scale, but they are not a separately reported segment that can be compared directly with Nike’s geographic segments.

The distinction matters when interpreting the “billion-dollar brand” label: it refers here to annual product sales reported by Nike, not earnings, cash flow, or the value of a standalone company.
