What training and work experience does the cafe offer?
Published descriptions say participants undertake practical hospitality experience through a Certificate II in Hospitality. They rotate through a range of cafe roles:

PerthNow describes the practical experience as lasting six months, with the aim of helping participants move into other workplace opportunities. VTS Training says it partnered with Divine Social to provide the educational foundation and has described longer-term apprenticeships and traineeships as possible pathways. That description is not confirmation that a particular placement is currently available.
The cafe was created by Kerry and Lee Hickman. VTS says their son Ben, who lives with autism, completed its Certificate III in Hospitality; Lee has a background as a chef. The family’s effort to create meaningful work for Ben helped inspire the cafe. Kerry Hickman told PerthNow, “Ben had always dreamed of being a chef, but no one wanted to give him a chance,” adding, “So we decided to create the opportunity for him and others like him.”

What was the cafe created to address?
The family’s stated aim is to provide meaningful hospitality work and training. Lee Hickman described the intention to Perth Happenings as creating “a place where people with disabilities aren’t just included — they’re celebrated.” Those are the family’s aims, not evidence of measured employment outcomes.
The available accounts describe the training model and its intended next step, but do not provide independent evaluation data, participant employment rates, or evidence that six months of experience leads to a job. VTS’s own account of its partnership is available on its cafe partnership page.

The cafe grew from Divine Social, the Hickmans’ events business, which PerthNow described as offering regular activities for people with disabilities to connect and socialise. The report said it had more than 150 active participants at the time of publication; that is a dated figure, not a current count.
When did the cafe open?
PerthNow reported on 30 October 2025 that the cafe had opened in late September 2025. VTS Training had earlier said the planned opening date was 22 October 2025. Those dates conflict: the latter was a planned date, while PerthNow’s later report described an opening that had already taken place. The reported late-September opening is therefore the clearest account of when it opened, but the sources do not explain the discrepancy.

How should readers interpret the workforce statistic in the news report?
PerthNow cited a figure of about 42 per cent of adults with autism engaged in the workforce, compared with 84.9 per cent of working-age adults without disability. The report did not name the original statistical publisher, publication year, population definition, or measure. Treat these as figures reported by PerthNow, not as a current, independently traceable employment rate.
