The available model-year comparisons identify the 2024 Sportage and 2025 Telluride as about-average candidates, while the 2022 Sorento rates below its same-year peers. Treat those findings as starting points—not guarantees—and make the specific car’s condition, recall status, records, and warranty part of your decision.
Which used Kia models look most promising?
Among the selected model years with comparable reliability ratings, the 2024 Sportage and 2025 Telluride are the more reasonable candidates to investigate. Consumer Reports describes both as about average against other cars from their respective model years; neither is identified as a standout reliability leader. The 2022 Sorento is the cautionary example in this group, rated less reliable than same-year cars.
| Model year | Consumer Reports reliability comparison | NHTSA recalls listed on Consumer Reports page | What a buyer should take from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 Kia Sportage | About average versus other 2024 cars | 3 | A reasonable candidate to investigate, not a proven top performer. The page includes an owner-reported steering-vibration example; that does not establish a universal defect. |
| 2025 Kia Telluride | About average versus other 2025 cars | 3 | A reasonable candidate to investigate, with reliability evidence specific to this model year. |
| 2022 Kia Sorento | Less reliable than other 2022 cars | 9 | Use the rating as a reason for especially careful record review and inspection; it does not mean every example is defective. |
| 2012 Kia Optima | About average versus other 2012 cars | 5 | Check the VIN for recall applicability and completed repairs, including the specified HECU fire-risk recall. |
Ratings and recall counts in this table come from the model-year pages cited below. A page’s recall total is not a count of open recalls on any particular car; recall applicability and remedy status must be checked by VIN.
Why reliability needs to be judged by model year
A model name alone does not tell you how a particular used car will fare. Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand-level page places Kia 21st for used-car reliability, but that is a brand comparison—not a forecast for an individual vehicle or a substitute for a model-year rating. Its brand reliability history draws on subscriber survey information; the page references about 380,000 vehicles overall, not a sample limited to Kia owners.

The selected model-year findings also show why a broad label can mislead: the Sportage and Telluride ratings are about average for their respective years, while the Sorento finding is below average for 2022. These examples do not establish a complete ranking of Kia nameplates or identify the most reliable Kia model year overall. Confirm that any rating you consult matches the car’s exact year and configuration; do not assume it applies to every engine, drivetrain, trim, or equipment package.
How to assess a specific used Kia before buying
- Match the comparison to the car. Confirm its model year, engine, drivetrain, trim, and equipment. A finding for one model year should not be carried over to another.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the vehicle identification number to check current recall status with NHTSA or Kia. Ask the seller for documentation of completed repairs, and confirm any remedy with a Kia dealer or NHTSA. The recall totals on model pages do not show whether an individual car’s work is complete.
- Review service and repair records. Look for consistent maintenance documentation, significant repairs, and evidence of damage or deferred service. Have an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase; no single rating can reveal its condition.
- Verify the warranty in writing. Ask for the actual coverage terms, the vehicle’s in-service date and mileage, and confirmation of eligibility. Do not assume the full original new-car warranty automatically transfers to every used Kia.
- Compare the car with your budget and needs. Consider passenger and cargo space, fuel use, insurance, local repair access, and the asking price. Reliability comparisons alone do not establish which listing offers the best value or lowest total ownership cost.
What Kia CPO and warranty coverage can—and cannot—tell you
Kia describes its Certified Pre-Owned program as including a 165-point inspection, a CPO powertrain warranty, and additional coverage. That can provide a defined inspection and coverage path, but certification is not a substitute for reading the vehicle’s contract. Confirm what applies to the specific car, including coverage duration, exclusions, mileage limits, and the date from which coverage is measured.

Kia’s headline new-car warranty terms also have purchaser and other conditions. For a used vehicle, verify the remaining coverage and transfer rules directly rather than treating the new-car warranty headline as a promise that applies unchanged to every owner.

Recall reports should be read by vehicle population and VIN, not generalized to every Kia. Consumer Reports’ 2012 Optima page describes an HECU recall for specified Kia models and years involving an electrical short that could cause an engine-compartment fire; the listed remedy advice was HECU fuse replacement through dealers. Check whether the particular vehicle is covered and whether the remedy was completed.

Separately, an IIHS/HLDI 2019 comparison reported 4.2 noncrash fire insurance claims per 10,000 insured vehicle-years for the specific Hyundai and Kia 2.0-liter turbocharged vehicles in its comparison, versus 1.7 for control vehicles. Those figures concern that defined population and period; they are not a general Kia failure rate and should not be used to estimate risk for every model.
