For an immediate cash voucher with little preparation, a Coinstar kiosk is convenient—but it charges a fee that varies by location. If you want to keep more of the money, call your bank or credit union first to ask whether it accepts loose or rolled coins and what it charges.
Compare your options
| Option | Preparation | What you receive | Cost and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinstar kiosk | Pour in clean coins; no sorting, counting, or rolling required. | A voucher to redeem at checkout or customer service. | Coinstar says U.S. cash transactions may cost up to 15.9% of the coins’ value plus a transaction fee of up to $0.99. Actual fees vary by location and appear before you proceed. Coinstar’s cash options |
| Bank or credit union | Depends on the institution; it may require coins to be rolled. | Potentially an account deposit or exchange, depending on the institution’s service. | Acceptance, fees, account-holder requirements, and limits vary. Call to confirm before you go. |
| Spend coins directly | Use an amount accepted at checkout. | The goods or services you purchase, without using a coin-conversion service. | Convenient for a small amount, subject to the merchant’s checkout rules. |
Use a kiosk when convenience matters most
Coinstar says you can get cash in a few minutes: feed clean coins into the kiosk, wait for it to count them, then take the voucher to checkout or customer service to redeem it. The cash option is not free. Coinstar’s U.S. page lists a possible service fee of up to 15.9% plus a transaction fee of up to $0.99; these are stated maximums, not the fee at every location. Check the exact fee displayed before starting and decide whether the convenience is worth that cost. Coinstar cash terms
Prepare coins and check the alternatives
Remove dirt, debris, and other objects before feeding coins into a kiosk. Coinstar warns that food, screws, dirty coins, and sticky coins can jam the machine or interfere with counting. Coinstar help
Coinstar also lists eGift cards and charitable donations as alternatives to cash. Terms can differ by option and location, so review what the kiosk displays rather than assuming either alternative is fee-free. Coinstar help
Ask your bank or credit union before rolling coins
A bank or credit union may accept coin deposits or exchanges, but its rules are institution-specific. Before making a trip, ask whether it accepts loose coins or only customer-rolled coins, whether the service is limited to account holders, whether a fee applies, and whether there is a quantity limit. Do not assume the service is available or free without confirmation.

If the institution requires rolled coins, paper coin wrappers can help you prepare them. Confirm its requirements first; having wrappers does not mean the institution will accept the coins.
Spend a small amount in ordinary transactions
If you have only a modest amount, using accepted coins at checkout avoids a conversion service. Follow the merchant’s checkout rules; policies may differ, and this option is less practical for a large container of coins.

Choose based on total cost and effort
- Need cash quickly with minimal preparation? A kiosk avoids sorting and rolling, but check its location-specific fee before you begin.
- Have a large amount or want to limit fees? Call your bank or credit union and compare its confirmed terms with the kiosk’s on-screen fee.
- Have only a small amount? Consider spending the coins directly if the merchant accepts them under its checkout rules.
