Vinícius Júnior topped the reported salary ranking for players at the 2024 Copa América, at €20.83 million per season. Lionel Messi ranked eighth, at €11.16 million per year. These are reported gross annual club-salary figures—not a complete accounting of each player’s income from bonuses, endorsements, or other ventures.
The 10 highest-paid players at Copa América 2024
Exame and Lance! published the same ranking, attributing its figures to Capology. Their reports describe the amounts as gross annual or per-season salaries. The table preserves the reporting unit used for each figure; the list is a historical snapshot of players at the tournament, not a current-pay ranking.
| Rank | Player | National team | Reported gross salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Vinícius Júnior | Brazil | €20.83 million per season (reported as R$122.5 million) |
| 2 | Marquinhos | Brazil | €16.8 million per season (reported as R$99 million) |
| 3 | Federico Valverde | Uruguay | €16.67 million per season (reported as R$98 million) |
| 4 | Éder Militão | Brazil | €14.58 million per season (reported as R$86 million) |
| 5 | Rodrygo | Brazil | €12.5 million per season (reported as R$73.5 million) |
| 6 | Raphinha | Brazil | €12.5 million per season (reported as R$73.5 million) |
| 7 | Alphonso Davies | Canada | €11.25 million per season (reported as R$66 million) |
| 8 | Lionel Messi | Argentina | €11.16 million per year (reported as R$65.5 million) |
| 9 | Lautaro Martínez | Argentina | €11.1 million per season (reported as R$65 million) |
| 10 | Enzo Fernández | Argentina | €11.1 million per season (reported as R$65 million) |
Five of the ten players represented Brazil. The first six places included five Brazilians; Valverde, of Uruguay, was the exception.
What these salary figures measure
The ranking is presented as annual club compensation, not pay for representing a national team at Copa América. It also does not rank total player earnings across every source. Exame notes that the MLS-reported value for Messi excludes bonuses, signing bonuses, and other additional sums. Accordingly, it should not be treated as a full measure of his compensation.

Other published figures may use different definitions. The MLS Players Association’s 2024 salary guide distinguishes annualized base salary from annualized average guaranteed compensation for players under contract as of April 25, 2024. Those are separate metrics, so an MLS guide figure cannot be compared with this ranking without identifying which measure is being used.
Forbes’s 2024–25 global soccer earnings estimates have broader coverage: they include estimated on-field earnings such as base salary and bonuses, and in some cases club image-rights agreements, alongside off-field income such as endorsements, licensing, appearances, and memorabilia. Forbes notes that Messi’s figure reflects 2024 compensation because MLS plays on a calendar-year schedule. That broader estimate is not directly comparable to the salary-only ranking above.

How to read the ranking
- It is a reported estimate. Exame and Lance! attribute the list to Capology. The figures should be understood as reported estimates, not as a fully audited disclosure of every contract term.
- Gross salary is not take-home pay. The table does not state a player’s after-tax income or account for personal expenses.
- Season and year are the reports’ units. Most entries are described per season; Messi’s is described per year. Keep that wording in mind when comparing entries or other salary sources.
- The tournament has a defined time frame. The 2024 Copa América was held in the United States from June 20 to July 14, 2024. This ranking concerns that edition.
