No reliable public figure establishes Sir Stuart Rose’s personal net worth. Marks & Spencer’s published figures document his compensation during and after his time as chief executive; they do not disclose his assets, debts, investments or overall wealth.
Is Stuart Rose’s net worth publicly known?
Not from the sources cited here. M&S remuneration disclosures report pay-related figures, not a personal balance sheet. Those figures cannot establish net worth: they do not show a person’s full assets and liabilities, or how income was taxed, spent or invested. Online estimates should therefore not be treated as verified unless supported by evidence that actually values Rose’s personal wealth.
What do the published figures refer to?
These amounts use different measures and cover different periods. None is a net-worth estimate.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and period | Does it establish net worth? |
|---|---|---|---|
| £4.294 million | CEO single figure of remuneration for Stuart Rose | Marks & Spencer Group plc 2014 annual report; reporting year 2009/10. M&S annual reports | No; it is reported remuneration. |
| £269,000 | Final reported single figure of remuneration for Rose after his CEO tenure ended | Marks & Spencer Group plc 2014 annual report; reporting year 2010/11. M&S annual reports | No; it is reported remuneration. |
| £1.16 million to £875,000 | Rose’s salary, which decreased on 31 July 2010 | Marks & Spencer Group plc 2011 annual review. M&S annual reports | No; salary is not total wealth or necessarily total remuneration. |
| £8.1 million | A retirement “goodbye” package reported by the press | The Guardian, 2011, which said details appeared in the M&S annual report. The Guardian | No; a reported package is not an asset valuation. |
Why compensation is not the same as net worth
Salary is one form of pay. A single figure of remuneration is the company’s reported measure for a particular reporting year, while the Guardian’s £8.1 million description refers to a retirement package. Their labels and contexts differ, so adding these amounts together would not produce a reliable wealth estimate. None shows what Rose owned or owed at a particular date.

Who is Stuart Rose?
Sir Stuart Rose is the former Marks & Spencer chief executive. The company’s 2014 annual report says he held the CEO role from 31 May 2004 to 30 April 2010. M&S lists Stuart Machin as its CEO since May 2022, so the two executives should not be confused. M&S leadership
