It is a starting framework—not a fixed meal plan or a promise of lower grocery bills. Use it to build a list around meals you expect to make, your budget, and the food you already have.
What is the 6-to-1 grocery shopping method?
Chef and food creator Will Coleman popularized the method as a simple set of category counts: six vegetables, five fruits, four proteins, three starches, two sauces or spreads, and one fun item. The counts help prompt choices; they do not prescribe exact quantities, serving sizes, or a week’s worth of meals. Coleman described the goal as shopping intentionally and prioritizing ingredients for meals. The Kitchn’s 2024 explainer attributes that description to him.
For a personal-finance reader, the useful idea is structure: decide what foods can serve several meals before shopping, rather than treating the six categories as a checklist that must be filled at any cost. The method itself has not been shown to produce a typical dollar saving.
How to use the method without overspending
- Plan around the week you actually have. Consider meals, work or school schedules, household needs, and food already in the pantry or freezer before you write the list. A dietitian’s guidance at Simple Start Nutrition recommends starting with household schedule and needs.
- Choose ingredients that can work in more than one meal. For example, onions, greens, carrots, and frozen vegetables can fill vegetable slots; bananas or frozen berries can count as fruit; beans, eggs, tofu, fish, or meat can be protein choices; and rice, pasta, potatoes, or bread can serve as starches. These are options, not required purchases. Practical examples and adaptations are also covered by Storehouse New Mexico.
- Count practical produce, not just fresh produce. Canned and frozen fruit and vegetables can fit the method when they are more affordable, available, or convenient. They can also help you avoid buying fresh ingredients you may not use in time.
- Adjust the counts and quantities. Household size, dietary needs, budget, existing supplies, and sale prices may all change what makes sense. The point is to make a useful list; buying extra food just to reach a number can work against that goal.
- Use sauces and spreads to connect the ingredients. They can help turn a small group of staples into different meals. Keep the fun item optional rather than treating it as another required expense.
What to put in each category

The examples are prompts, not a prescribed basket. If your household already has rice, for instance, it may make more sense to skip that purchase than to buy another starch simply to meet the count.

Will the 6-to-1 method save money?
It may help some shoppers make a more deliberate list, but available coverage does not establish a typical saving, a reliable reduction in food waste, or a measured time saving across households. One Kitchn writer reported spending $87.63 on a Trader Joe’s trip and compared it with their usual spend of about $150. That is one person’s account, not a controlled test or a general estimate; the article describing the shopping trip does not make those figures representative of other shoppers.
To see whether the approach helps your own budget, compare planned spending with your usual grocery spending over several trips, while accounting for household size and what you bought. Do not assume a lower total means the method caused the difference: store, sale prices, quantities, and the items on your list can all change from one trip to another.

How does it compare with 5-4-3-2-1 shopping?
Some versions use a 5-4-3-2-1 pattern, but there is no single standardized arrangement across those variants. Martha Stewart’s December 4, 2025 explainer discusses variants alongside Coleman’s 6-to-1 formula. The practical difference is which categories and counts a version emphasizes; some variants may arrange categories differently, including whether the list explicitly includes both a starch or grain and a treat. Pick the version whose categories fit the meals you plan, rather than following a formula that does not suit your household.
Who may need to adapt it?
The method is a shopping framework, not medical nutrition advice. People with specialized diets or health requirements may need to choose different categories or quantities, and anyone following dietary guidance should prioritize that guidance over the formula. The counts can also be adapted for household size, budget, and existing food. Canned and frozen produce and non-meat proteins are valid choices, as Storehouse New Mexico’s guidance notes.

Will Coleman’s official shop lists Cart to Kitchen: The 6-to-1 Grocery Shopping Method Cookbook, described on the page as including 60 recipes and a 10-week grocery and meal-planning guide.
