Exodus leads one independent equivalent-sales estimate, so it is a notable contender rather than a settled second-place result.
How the ranking works
Album revenue is not reported consistently in the available sources. Some figures are copies sold in a particular territory, some are certification awards, and others are modeled equivalent album sales. They cannot be combined into a precise worldwide revenue leaderboard. The short ranking below reflects the strongest available commercial evidence, with each figure kept in its own measurement and geographic context.

Legend (1984): strongest-supported commercial leader
Bob Marley’s official release page reports more than 14 million copies sold in the United States and approximately 25 million worldwide, and calls Legend the best-selling reggae album of all time. Guinness World Records also names it reggae’s best-selling album; its page reports certified U.K. sales of 1.8 million and says U.S. sales exceed 10 million. Those are Guinness’s stated figures, not a directly comparable worldwide total.
In the United States, the RIAA says Legend reached 15× multi-Platinum and became Bob Marley & The Wailers’ highest-certified album. Certification supports its standing in that market, but it is not a complete global sales count.

Sales figures also depend on the time period and method. Marley’s official history page says that Nielsen SoundScan reported more than 250,000 copies sold annually since the album’s 1984 release. That is the page’s reported annual pace, not a claim that the same number recurs today. The page also says Legend was one of 17 albums to exceed 10 million copies since SoundScan began tabulating in 1991.

Exodus (1977): first in one equivalent-sales model
ChartMasters ranks Exodus first among Marley releases in its own system, estimating 37.0 million equivalent album sales. This is ChartMasters’ model-based estimate, not a publisher-reported physical-copy total, and it cannot be directly compared with the official Legend page’s reported copies sold. The estimate makes Exodus a major contender, but does not establish it as the worldwide sales or revenue leader under a shared measurement.

Legend - 30th Anniversary Edition [Tri-Color 2 LP]- Tri-Color Vinyl
The Official Charts Company supplies a different kind of context: its U.K. album-sales chart entry for Legend shows a peak of No. 4 and 566 weeks on the chart. Peak position and chart longevity describe chart performance, not units sold.
Why a longer ranked list would overstate the evidence
Marley’s official discography provides catalog context but no album-by-album sales table. The available sources do not establish comparable lifetime sales or gross revenue for other albums, so assigning them exact positions would imply more certainty than the evidence supports. The RIAA page reports that the band has 11 certified albums and more than 21.5 million Album Awards in total; that aggregate does not rank individual records.

For a valid comparison, each album’s figure would need to use the same measure, geography, source and period. Without those shared terms, a chart position, certification level, worldwide copy estimate and equivalent-sales model are useful context but not interchangeable leaderboard entries.

Marley’s official discography lists Legend as a 1984 release. Universal Music Canada announced a special 35th-anniversary 2LP reissue on 180-gram vinyl in 2019; that announcement identifies a specific historical edition, not a guarantee of current availability. Check the edition details with a retailer before buying.
