The figures that circulate mix reported design or build costs with auction estimates, sale prices and valuations—and some claims do not clearly describe the cost of a single suit.
Here are the best-documented reported figures, with their scope and limits made explicit. They are not a verified top-nine ranking: the available evidence does not establish nine comparable production costs.
Why a definitive top-nine ranking is not supported
“Cost” can mean several different things: what it reportedly took to design or make a costume, what an auction house estimated a prop might sell for, what a buyer actually paid, or what someone valued an item at after it went missing. Those amounts answer different questions. A sale price, for example, reflects a collectible market; it does not tell you what the studio spent to make the costume.
Mint’s July 2025 list collects several widely repeated figures, but it does not provide primary accounting records for each costume. The amounts below should therefore be read as reported claims, not audited production costs. For auction examples, Propstore documents particular production-made lots and their auction context, not a universal ranking by original build cost.

The reported figures—and what each one means
| Suit | Reported amount | What the figure describes | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shazam | Upwards of $1 million | Reported cost to create the costume | Syfy Wire attributed the claim to costume designer Leah Butler and reported that ten suits were made. Director David F. Sandberg objected to interpreting the million-dollar amount as the price of one suit. |
| Black Panther | Approximately $500,000 | Reported cost of the first design of T’Challa’s suit | The FADER reported the figure in a 2018 interview-based article with costume designer Ruth E. Carter. Its scope is not established as equivalent to Mint’s separate $300,000-per-costume claim. |
| Black Panther | $300,000 per costume | Reported per-costume amount | Mint gives this figure, but it should not be treated as the same measure as the reported half-million-dollar first-design figure. |
| Iron Man | $325,000 | Reported internal valuation before the suit was reported stolen | Mint reports a valuation, not a verified production cost or sale price. |
| Batman | $150,000 | Reported valuation of a recovered suit | The Los Angeles Times reported this figure in a 2002 theft story. It is a historical valuation, not a production-cost record or verified sale. |
Shazam: a million-dollar report, not a one-suit price
Syfy Wire attributed the “upwards of a million” figure to costume designer Leah Butler and reported that ten suits were made. That does not establish that one wearable suit cost more than $1 million. In a response reported by ComicBook.com, director David F. Sandberg said: “The thing is that it’s not the price for one suit.” The figure’s scope remains the central caveat.
Black Panther: two figures with different stated scopes
The FADER’s 2018 interview-based report puts the cost of the first design of T’Challa’s suit at approximately half a million dollars. Mint, in its July 2025 list, gives $300,000 per costume. The available reporting does not show that these amounts measure the same thing, so neither should be used to confirm or correct the other.

Iron Man: an internal valuation
Mint reports that the Iron Man suit was valued internally at $325,000 before it was reported stolen. A valuation is not evidence that the suit cost that amount to produce, or that it later sold for that amount.
Batman: a historical theft-story valuation
In a 2002 theft story, the Los Angeles Times reported that a recovered Batman suit was valued at $150,000. The report establishes a historical valuation, not the costume’s original production cost or a completed auction sale.

What auction listings can—and cannot—tell you
Propstore’s 2025 catalog describes a film-used Tobey Maguire Spider-Man suit, and its Batman listings show how production-made costume lots are presented in an auction setting. These records are useful for identifying particular screen-used items and understanding their collectible-market context. An estimate or realized sale, when reported for a specific lot and sale date, is not the original cost of making that costume.
That distinction matters when comparing screen-used suits. A particular lot’s estimate or sale result belongs to that item, auction and date. It cannot be added to a list of design-cost claims and labeled one of the most expensive suits to make.

How to judge a claim about a “most expensive” suit
Before treating a figure as a record, check what it measures and how well its scope is documented:
- Measure: Is it a production or design cost, auction estimate, completed sale, or valuation?
- Scope: Does it refer to one wearable suit, an early design, multiple suits, or a broader costume program?
- Date and currency: When was the amount reported or realized, and in what currency? Nominal figures from different decades are not automatically comparable in purchasing power.
- Evidence owner: Is the amount attributed to a named designer, director, auction house, studio, or secondary report?
- Confidence: Is the figure confirmed, disputed, or unclear in scope?
With those distinctions in view, the reported figures above are useful clues, but they do not establish a single winner or a defensible ranking of nine costumes by production cost.
