The right kids’ skateboard is a complete that fits the child’s height and shoe size, suits the pavement and kind of riding, and leaves room for protective gear. Age ranges can help narrow the choice, but they are not universal sizing rules: retailer recommendations differ, so use the child’s measurements and intended use to make the final call.
What size skateboard does my kid need?
Start with deck width, then check length and how comfortably the child can stand on the board. A narrower deck can be easier for a smaller rider to control, while a larger child may prefer a wider, full-size board. Height and shoe size are useful checks; age alone is not enough.
Retailer charts do not agree on one age-to-width formula. Tactics’ 2026 guide suggests 6.75–7.0-inch decks for ages 5–7, 7.0–7.25 inches for ages 8–9, and 7.25–7.75 inches from age 10 onward, while emphasizing foot size and height ( Tactics’ skateboard buying guide). For a UK audience, Skatewarehouse.co.uk’s May 27, 2026 guide describes 7.25 inches as a common junior width and says a child over five feet tall or approaching UK shoe sizes 4–5 may be ready for a 7.75-inch full-size deck. It gives junior-board length as approximately 29–29.5 inches ( Skatewarehouse.co.uk’s size guide).
These are starting points, not rules. If possible, have the child stand on a candidate board in skate shoes: their stance should feel manageable, and their feet should not be forced into an awkward position. Consider whether they want to cruise around the neighborhood or learn tricks, since the preferred setup can differ.

What size skateboard for a 7-year-old?
Tactics’ 2026 age chart points to a 6.75–7.0-inch deck for ages 5–7. Treat that range as a shortlist, not a definitive answer: compare the child’s height and shoe size, and check how the board feels underfoot. A smaller-footed or shorter seven-year-old may suit a narrower option; a larger child may be more comfortable on a wider one.
What does a complete skateboard include?
A complete is a ready-to-skate setup assembled from a deck, grip tape, trucks, wheels, bearings, and assembly hardware. It saves a family from selecting and fitting each component separately. Check the product description to confirm what is included and whether it arrives assembled, since a board called a complete does not by itself establish its fit for a particular child.

12 size-matched skateboard options to consider
The options below are examples named by specialist retailers or a manufacturer, not independently tested winners. They are organized by size and use so you can build a shortlist around the child rather than treat the order as a ranking. Product availability and current specifications should be confirmed with the seller.
Smaller decks for younger or smaller riders
- SK8MAFIA House Logo 6.0 Micro Complete: Tactics lists this micro complete at 6.0 inches wide and 23.5 inches long. Consider it only if that compact size fits the rider; do not assume the word “micro” makes it right for every young child.
- Push Peek Over FP Soft Top 7.0 Complete: Tactics names this 7.0-inch complete as an example. Its stated model name includes “Soft Top”; check the listing for the construction and components, and assess whether the width suits the child’s feet.
- SkateXS Beginner Complete, 7-inch version: SkateXS describes its Beginner Complete as ready to ride and configurable in 7-inch, 7.25-inch, 7.4-inch, and 7.75-inch versions. The manufacturer lists 90A 53 mm wheels, bearings, trucks, grip tape, and assembly hardware; its 2026 update specifies a 6-ply maple deck for the 7-by-28-inch size. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent quality findings (SkateXS Beginner Complete).
Junior widths for growing riders
- Tactics 7.0 Logo Complete: Listed by Tactics as a complete in its logo range. Compare its exact deck length and components on the current product page before buying.
- Tactics 7.25 Logo Complete: A retailer-listed 7.25-inch option that aligns with Skatewarehouse.co.uk’s description of 7.25 inches as a common junior width. The child’s proportions and riding surface still matter.
- SkateXS Beginner Complete, 7.25-inch version: SkateXS lists this width as a configurable option and specifies 90A 53 mm wheels and the included complete components. Its 2026 update identifies 7-ply maple for sizes larger than 7 by 28 inches.
- SkateXS Beginner Complete, 7.4-inch version: Another configurable width from the same manufacturer, with the component and wheel specifications listed above. Compare the wider deck against the rider’s foot size rather than selecting it solely because it is the next size up.
- Tactics 7.375 Logo Complete: Tactics names a 7.375-inch Logo Complete among its examples. Review the seller’s current specifications to confirm the complete’s length and configuration.
- Tactics 7.5 Logo Complete: The retailer also names a 7.5-inch version. It may be worth comparing for a child ready for a wider deck, but deck width alone does not establish suitability.
Wider decks for larger children or broader use
- SkateXS Beginner Complete, 7.75-inch version: SkateXS lists this as its widest Beginner Complete configuration. The manufacturer specifies 90A 53 mm wheels and 7-ply maple for this larger size; confirm current details on its product page.
- Plan B Houston 8.0 Complete: Tactics includes this 8.0-inch complete in its examples. It is a substantially wider option than a junior-width deck, so consider it only when the child’s size and riding preferences support that choice.
- Enuff complete: Skatewarehouse.co.uk names Enuff among brands it stocks. The guide does not establish a specific model or its specifications, so choose a particular complete only after checking the seller’s current size and component information.
- Venom, Fracture, or Speed Demons complete: Skatewarehouse.co.uk also names these stocked brands. Its guide does not identify a particular model or establish product-level specifications for them; treat each as a brand to investigate, not a tested recommendation.
How should wheels match the place your child will ride?
Surface matters. Tactics’ 2026 guide favors softer wheels as a smoother beginner choice over rough pavement with cracks or small rocks. That is a retailer recommendation, not a guarantee that one wheel setup works best everywhere. Check the actual wheel specifications on the complete and consider where the child will skate most often.

- SIZED FOR KIDS: Our mini skateboards are more narrow and shorter in length than a typical skateboard, making them more proportionate for your little one. A big board can be overwhelming and hard to control for small kids learning how to ride, so this mini complete is the perfect skateboard to allow your child to have the most fun possible!
- FULLY ASSEMBLED: Our skateboard completes comes fully assembled and ready to ride directly out of the box.
- STURDY DECK CONSTRUCTION: The quality of the skateboard matters when you are just starting out. Our 7-ply Canadian maple decks are reliable and long-lasting, making them an easy board to learn on.
- EASY TURNING & CONTROL: Our professional grade skateboard trucks feature soft and responsive bushings, allowing even the lighter-weight kids to turn the board with minimal effort.
- SMOOTH RIDE: The key to a good beginner skateboard is its ability to roll effortlessly. Our 52mm 100A wheels and precision ABEC-7 bearings will ride smooth and easily maintain speed, which allows kids to establish their balance much quicker.
For a beginning rider, predictable ground is part of the setup: Seattle Children’s recommends practicing on smooth pavement, watching for hazards, and avoiding traffic. A board chosen for neighborhood cruising may not be the same choice a child would prefer for learning tricks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do kids need a helmet to skateboard?
Yes. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a properly fitting, safety-certified helmet and protective equipment. It reports that “One-third of skateboard injuries happen in the first week of learning the sport” (AAP’s HealthyChildren skateboard safety guidance; the publication year was not established). Seattle Children’s advises wearing a properly fitting helmet for every ride and recommends wrist guards, elbow pads, and knee pads. For trick or aggressive skating, it specifies a multi-impact helmet meeting ASTM F1492 (Seattle Children’s skateboard safety guidance).

Try the helmet and pads with the child before choosing a board. The helmet should fit properly, and protective equipment should be comfortable enough to wear while riding. Do not treat a board’s brand, price, or style as a substitute for fit and protective gear.
Age and supervision matter
The AAP says children younger than five should not ride skateboards and children aged 6–10 need close adult supervision. Have beginners learn basic technique, including how to fall, and stay with them as they practice.
