For an uncomplicated dry scalp, the best starting point is usually a gentle, non-medicated shampoo—not a dandruff treatment or a scrub. The right pick depends on whether your flakes come from dryness or dandruff, as well as your hair texture and sensitivity. Below is an editorial shortlist of 10 options drawn from trichologist-informed and beauty-editor recommendations; it is not a clinical ranking, and a product roundup cannot establish that a shampoo treats a scalp condition.
What is the best shampoo for a dry scalp?
If your scalp feels tight or itchy and has fine flakes, but you do not have signs pointing to dandruff or another skin condition, choose a mild, non-medicated cleanser. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises switching to a gentle, non-medicated shampoo for ordinary dry scalp. Moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and ceramides may suit a hydration-focused routine, while fragrance or essential oils can aggravate some sensitive scalps. AAD dry scalp guidance; Glamour’s product roundup.
These 10 options are selected for different needs, not ranked as if one formula were best for everyone. Shape’s trichologist-informed list names eight candidates; Glamour’s list contributes two additional options. Shape says its team tested more than a dozen brands over 12 weeks, assessing cleansing, irritation, hydration, and application; those are Shape’s evaluations, not independent clinical proof. Product formulas and labels can change, so check the current packaging before buying.

Descriptions of suitability reflect how the publications categorized these products, not a guarantee of results. A scrub or exfoliating formula is not the gentlest first choice for a sore or irritated scalp.

Are dandruff and dry scalp the same?
No. Both can cause itching and flakes, but they are different problems and may need different shampoo types. The AAD explains that dandruff can often improve with dandruff shampoo, while ordinary dry scalp calls for a gentle, non-medicated shampoo. Trichologist Jenna Binette told Shape that the two conditions are commonly confused but need different treatments. AAD’s explanation of dry scalp; Shape’s trichologist-informed roundup.
Dryness may occur when the skin loses too much water; hair products that strip natural oils, cold weather, and low humidity can contribute. Dandruff is often associated with seborrheic dermatitis, though flakes alone do not establish the cause. A product labeled anti-dandruff belongs in the dandruff branch of your routine, rather than serving as a universal dry-scalp fix.

For dandruff rather than simple dryness
CeraVe Anti-Dandruff Hydrating Shampoo is Glamour’s overall pick, and Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is its dandruff-focused option. Glamour also lists Jupiter Anti-Dandruff Balancing Shampoo for color-treated hair. These are medicated dandruff products, so use them for a dandruff concern and follow each label—not as a default treatment for dry skin. Glamour’s product roundup.
For occasional buildup or exfoliation
Briogeo Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo, Ceremonia Papaya Scalp Scrub, and Goop G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scrub Shampoo are Shape’s exfoliating or scrub-style candidates. They may appeal to someone seeking occasional buildup removal, but scrubbing is not a substitute for treating the cause of persistent flakes. Avoid making an exfoliant your first experiment if your scalp is inflamed, painful, or easily irritated. Shape also lists Sachajuan Scalp Shampoo as a rejuvenating scalp-focused choice. Shape’s roundup.
Rank #4
- Controls Scalp Fungus: Nizoral shampoo is different because it doesn’t just address the symptoms, it gets right to the root of dandruff as it kills the fungus that causes it
- Dandruff Shampoo For Men and Women: The only over the counter dandruff shampoo with Ketoconazole 1%, a clinically proven, powerful dandruff fighting ingredient
- 10X More Effective: The active ingredient in Nizoral is 10X more effective at killing scalp fungus, the primary cause of dandruff, than the active ingredient in the leading dandruff shampoo based on lab testing (not a product to product comparison)
- Gentle On Hair: Gentle enough to use on color treated, chemically processed, or gray hair
For thick hair
Living Proof No-Frizz Shampoo is listed by Glamour for thick hair. It is one of that publication’s hair-type-specific recommendations, not a dandruff treatment. Glamour’s roundup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you use a dandruff shampoo?
Use one when dandruff is the likely problem, rather than assuming that any flaking means dry skin. The AAD lists these active ingredients in dandruff shampoos: zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, sulfur, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, and coal tar. Which ingredient and schedule are appropriate depend on the product label and your circumstances. Follow package directions; some shampoos need to stay on the scalp for 5–10 minutes before rinsing. - TWICE THE VALUE FOR AN ALWAYS-ON ROUTINE: Dandruff is an ongoing concern. Consistent daily use is what keeps it controlled. Two bottles give you twice the supply so the routine never runs out, in a formula that is gentle, hydrating, and pH balanced.
- 72-HOUR DANDRUFF PROTECTION: Head and Shoulders zinc pyrithione formula stays on your scalp after rinsing, keeping it working between washes. Up to 72 hours of protection, up to 100% dandruff protection, even on non-wash days, with regular use.
- FIGHTS DANDRUFF AT THE SOURCE: Dandruff is caused by Malassezia yeast deep in the scalp, not just at the surface. The 1% pyrithione zinc formula targets it where hides, fighting dandruff at the root cause rather than only treating the visible result.
- DRY SCALP CARE: Helps restore scalp moisture balance and addresses itch associated with dandruff, so the routine works for both dandruff and dry-scalp needs.
- ALMOND OIL COMFORT: Infused with almond oil for a soothing, comforting experience when dry scalp is part of your dandruff routine.
Apply dandruff shampoo to the scalp rather than working it through the full length of curly or coily hair, which can become dry. Condition the lengths as needed. If an over-the-counter product does not work or dandruff is severe, the AAD recommends seeing a dermatologist. AAD guidance on treating dandruff.
How to choose and use a shampoo without worsening irritation
- Start with the likely cause. For ordinary dryness, try a gentle, non-medicated shampoo. If dandruff is the concern, choose a labeled dandruff treatment instead of a scrub.
- Match the formula to your hair. Consider whether your hair is fine, thick, curly, coily, or already dry. Keep medicated shampoo focused on the scalp, and condition lengths that feel dry.
- Check for sensitivity triggers. Review the current ingredient list if fragrance or essential oils have bothered you before.
- Follow the label. Use medicated products at the instructed frequency and leave-on time; do not assume every formula should be used like a regular shampoo.
- Stop escalating at home if symptoms worsen or persist. Repeatedly switching products or adding scrubs may not address the underlying cause.
The AAD says dry scalp can result when skin loses too much water and notes that hair products may strip natural oils. Low humidity and cold weather can also contribute. Keeping the routine gentle is a sensible first step when symptoms are mild and consistent with uncomplicated dryness. AAD dry scalp guidance.
When should you see a dermatologist?
Seek professional assessment for persistent or severe flakes, redness, pain, thick scale, sores, or hair loss, rather than continuing to test products. Those symptoms may require a diagnosis and treatment beyond shampoo. The AAD advises dermatologist evaluation when dandruff is severe or over-the-counter products are not working. AAD dry scalp guidance; AAD dandruff guidance; Trichology.com scalp-health guidance.
Psoriasis, eczema, contact dermatitis, and scalp infection should not be treated as conditions a shampoo roundup can diagnose or cure. If symptoms point beyond mild dryness or respond poorly to a basic routine, a clinician can help identify the cause and appropriate care.
