Tesla China’s 21,900-EV Week: What the December 2024 Figure Really Means

Tesla’s 21,900 China figure was its highest reported weekly sales total of Q4 2024, not a confirmed all-time record. Here’s how it differs from registration and retail figures.

Tesla reported 21,900 electric-vehicle sales in China in the first week of December 2024, its highest weekly figure of the fourth quarter—not a proven all-time weekly record. The number refers to one week, and a separate weekly archive lists it as insurance registrations, so it should not be confused with a monthly or annual sales total.

What did Tesla’s 21,900 figure measure?

Reuters reported on December 10, 2024, that Tesla China disclosed 21,900 EVs sold in China in the first week of December. Reuters described the result as the company’s highest weekly sales in Q4 2024. That is the supported record claim: the report does not establish an all-time weekly record. Reuters report republished by Investing.com.

A CnEVPost weekly-data archive lists 21,900 Tesla insurance registrations for the week ending December 8, 2024, following 18,700 for the week ending December 1. Reuters uses the term “sales,” while the archive labels its weekly figures as insurance registrations. The archive listing does not explain its underlying methodology, so the two labels should not be treated as interchangeable measures without qualification. CnEVPost weekly-data archive.

Period Figure Measure and source
Week ending December 1, 2024 18,700 Tesla insurance registrations listed by CnEVPost
First week of December 2024; week ending December 8 in the archive 21,900 Tesla China sales as reported by Reuters; insurance registrations as listed by CnEVPost

How should the result be put in context?

It was a weekly high within Q4, not a monthly or annual total

The 21,900 figure covers one week. It does not say how many vehicles Tesla sold or registered across all of December or across 2024. Reuters also reported more than 73,000 Tesla sales in China in November 2024, a separate monthly figure that cannot be directly compared with a single week as though the periods were equivalent.

Later retail data answers a different question

China Passenger Car Association data reported by CnEVPost puts Tesla China retail sales at 93,843 in December 2025 and 625,698 for full-year 2025. The December 2025 total exceeded the prior December high of 82,927 in December 2024, while full-year 2025 retail sales were down 4.78% year over year. These monthly and annual retail figures provide later context, but they use different periods and a stated retail-sales measure; they do not revise what the 2024 weekly figure represented. CnEVPost’s report on CPCA-based sales data.

What may have contributed to Tesla’s China performance?

Reuters discussed the Model Y and a limited-time year-end loan discount in its contemporaneous report. CnEVPost identifies the Model Y and Model 3 as vehicles produced at Tesla’s Shanghai factory. Those details offer market context, but the available reporting does not establish that the discount—or any single model—caused the 21,900 weekly result. A vehicle produced in Shanghai also should not automatically be counted as a domestic China sale: production location and sales destination are different things.

What is the careful takeaway?

Tesla’s reported 21,900 China figure was a strong first-week-of-December 2024 result and its highest weekly sales in Q4, according to Reuters. CnEVPost’s archive lists the same count as insurance registrations for the week ending December 8. The evidence supports neither an all-time weekly record nor treating the weekly number as a monthly or annual total.
