Those reports say he had slept in his car and showered at the Fremont factory to make a long commute more manageable—but they do not show that Tesla eliminated his position because of those choices.
What happened to Nico Murillo?
Futurism and Quartz reported on April 29, 2024, that Murillo, a production supervisor at Tesla’s Fremont facility, lost his job during a company restructuring. Quartz reported that he had worked at the facility until April 15 and had advanced over about five years from Production Associate to Lead Production Associate and then Production Supervisor. Futurism’s report and Quartz’s report describe the same episode.
Quartz relayed Murillo’s account of learning about the layoff: his work account was deactivated, he received an email while driving to work, and after texting his manager, he was told at the factory entrance that he had been laid off. The report reproduces wording from the notice he described: “Unfortunately as a result, your position has been eliminated by this restructuring.” The notice is quoted through Murillo’s account; it is not an independently obtained Tesla statement.
Futurism reported that the restructuring affected more than 10 percent of Tesla employees, or about 14,000 workers worldwide. That is the approximate scale reported by Futurism in 2024, not a workforce count independently verified by the reports discussed here. Futurism also relayed a company memo’s explanation that the cuts addressed “duplication of roles and job functions in certain areas.”

Was he laid off for sleeping in his car?
The reports do not establish that. They place Murillo’s layoff within Tesla’s broader restructuring and describe the notice as saying his position was eliminated by that restructuring. Neither report says the company dismissed him because he slept in his car, showered at work, or heated meals there. The headline framing that Tesla “fired” him for those habits goes beyond what the reporting supports.
What did the reports say about his routine?
Quartz reported that Murillo described a 90-minute commute and said that in 2023 he began sleeping in his car on workdays and showering at the factory. Futurism also reported that he had slept in the factory parking lot and made microwave meals to help meet production goals. These details come from Murillo’s reported account; the news reports do not independently verify his routine.

In September 2023, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced a lawsuit alleging racial harassment of Black employees at Tesla’s Fremont manufacturing facilities and retaliation against some workers who objected. The agency sought damages and workplace reforms. The EEOC announcement concerns a separate case: it is not evidence about Murillo’s layoff or its cause, and the allegations are not a finding about his individual circumstances.
